I have the feeling that Greta wouldn't mind the bashing and the bullying if that could help poor kids in Africa have a better future, but it won't.

Re: Stop the exploitation of Greta and children

Does Thunberg talk and care about poor kids in Africa? I though her mission was her own fears in her childhood and the climate change, potiticians and big corps which are supposedly the reason for her fears. The poor kids in Africa is not something that I relate to her.

Exactly. It was a tongue in cheek comment on a previous post of someone else, sorry for my failed attempt at sarcasm.

Btw, I won't comment on the "fears" thing, I'm not sure what you meant.

I went to look it up and was surprised to learn that
"a Vox editorial called it the "nation's biggest story" ".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Januar..._confrontation

Seems there was a confrontation on 18th January 2019, at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., a the end of two different demonstrations, and members a third group were there, too, and videos were taken and accusations flew about who was provoking whom, and whether or not it was alright to criticise anyone's behaviour, etc., and whether representations on the media are accurate or distort the truth, possibly by not telling the whole truth.
well,. more thahn that, certain celebrities were tweeting about how much they would like to punch one of the individuals involved (who was a child) in the face. That tweet got shared and went viral, with lots and lots of people professing their agreement.

As far as I know, nobody has fantasized about punching Greta in the face, but they have taken her to task on some of the things she said.

Yet interesting to see that those who were silent in the Covington case (and even some of the people who applauded the punch in the face remark back then) are now saying "how dare you" about Greta's critics.

I think it's not fair to play Greta the person.

She has genuine problems and fears of a magnitude we can't even begin to imagine.

We should feel very sorry for her.

The real problem here are the people who are instrumentalizing her fears for political gain.

Re: Stop the exploitation of Greta and children

I met Greta Thunberg in Switzerland last January. She came by train from Sweden.

Far from being exploited, she's an extremely driven and focused individual, who feels compelled to speak out to make a real difference before it's too late.

Yes. She's different, she expresses real fear (with good reason) about the existential threat that climate changes poses to the world.

She speaks for future generations and holds the current ones accountable.

It's difficult to understand why anyone feels compelled to mock or insult a 16 year old young woman. I found her message and the sincerity with which it is expressed to be inspiring.

The threat of Climate Change is bigger than our angst with Greta Thunberg

She may have people talking about her but not so much on climate change, in fact I feel she is having a
very negative effect on the problem which is giving rise to a general stupidity of wasting hours and
hours on pointless posts about Greta Thunberg and zilch about Climate change and the threat of
pollution, plastic waste & global warming, etc on the environment.

People should be posting more about the climate change speeches of reputed scientists, academics
and people with gravitas such as Sir David Attenborough and Christiana Figueres, than waste their
time on the diatribe directed at Greta Thunberg.

I have mocked about this before but these Greta posts are getting tiresome for those who would
rather move on and talk about the environment.

Don’t read about her then, if you think it detracts your attention from the problem of climate change. Simple.

I think she’s great. Go Greta!

On the contrary. The concern for her welfare she gets from otherwise foaming-at-the-mouth gammons is quite heart warming. I mean the compassion shown by Toady Young on the Piers Moron GMTV show the other day had me weeping into my porridge.

I fully agree. Her actions are raising awareness and that is a really positive thing in my opinion.

So what, it´s a done deal, the climate will change for better or worst and nothing we do or don´t will affect the outcome.
So let´s all get on with our lives and carry on.

Saying nothing we can do will affect it is bullsh1t or a cop out or both.

Whether we do actually something is another matter, which is impacted by attitudes such as yours and the attitudes of imbecilic climate change deniers.
To be clear, I'm not saying you are an imbecilic climate change denier, but I am saying your attitude will have a negative impact.

My attitude? Not really methinks, will knowing about and accepting climate change stop you from driving one mm less with your SUV, will it make you think twice before buying fruit or vegetables that have been flown in from some far flung end of the earth? When you bought your last cellphone did you give a think about the cobalt mines in the Congo. Your last shrimp cocktail was made with shrimps caught in the Pacific, frozen and flown to Migros, or caught in the Northsea and flown to Morocco for shelling and then flown back. They get more airmiles than I do these days.
You can´t say my or anybody´s attitude is bad when you open your eyes and see what is around you and realize that there is nothing you can do that makes even a bit of difference.
What gets me is that it is all talk and talk and talk and in the end things stay the way they are. Buisness as usual.

In terms of change, I only trust people that live by example. Unfortunately, Greta doesn't do that.
