Thomas Cook declares bankrupcy.

And who were the people behind Thomas Cook. The Chinese of course ( Fosun )

600,000 people stranded worldwide!

Brings back memories of the Cook Travellers Cheques days

It's a shame but not so rurprising, as Thomas Cook was always riddled with scandal.

Chinese owned with more employees in Germany than the UK.
The list goes on and on.

worst flight I've ever been on.. one time, never again..

Took a package holiday 10 years ago to where-ever, the seat in front was pretty much touching my face, the plane was ancient, panels falling off, carpets worn, all filthy.. The cabin crew looked like they'd been recruited from a care home.
I wasn't expecting luxury but it was like a flying pound shop.

Re: Thomas Cook declares bankrupcy.

In 1958 together with two friends we had a superb two weeks holiday in Riccione in the hotel La Luna which still exists today, lying in the sun on almost empty beaches, with full board and a caring hotel staff. We went by train - 22 hours each way from Victoria and back, on our arrival in Riccione we were picked up at the station by the hotel's horse and carriage and taken back too.

We booked this at Thomas Cook's travel shop at King's Cross and it cost per person

£32

That was about 4 weeks wages for me and I had to save like mad!

We regularly fly easyjet, it's the only airline flying direct from Geneve to Scotlandshire...
It has considerably more lag/face room than BA!

Do ppl still use travel agencies? Everything can be booked online nowawadays (tickets, hotels, research etc) Saying that my parents still have a "guy" they use to get all their travel arrangements done. I think my dad pays in cash too.

1: Thomas Cook Group is and was not owned by the Chinese.

2: Not all customers will be stranded, the Dutch for example have an insurance so they can finish their holidays and given that they would fly with other companies have also no problem with returning home. For them nothing changes.

slightly OT, but here in Singapore many elderly travellers rely on travel agencies still (also domestic workers to buy their yearly tickets back home) this opens up huge exploitations by the agencies, who overbook, scam prices, offers. It really angers me that they prey on the weak and poor and less internet savvy folk. So IMO it's good we can take control of our own travel arrangements.
I know TC was in another time/era when travel was still a luxury, but like you said this era will die out soon (or already has)

We went to Orlando late last year .. We done loads of research, wife used to work in corporate travel and then retail travel shops.

Much as we tried we could not get anywhere near to matching the deal we got from Virgin.. Flights, Villa, Car hire.. One package, literally no extras to pay. ATOL insured etc.

Doing it ourselves was coming out 3-4k more expensive with all the concerns around cancellations, missing a connection, insurance, what if this / that.. etc.

So I guess at least some of them have a purpose.

Re: Thomas Cook declares bankrupcy.

The first Thomas Cook tour was to Switzerland, in 1863 and the influx of subsequent British tourists was one of the things that shaped the Swiss tourist industry.

The highlight of that first trip was a trip up the Rigi - by horse and cart in those days.

For sure. I went on a package holiday a few years ago (with TUI I think) and it worked out a lot cheap than doing it myself on a like for like basis.

A lot of hassle is taken out of the equation as well for things like bus transfers to and from the airport.

Thomas Cook were more than a Travel Agent.

Their are two sides to Travel Agents.

I am sure there is still much need for the Business side of Travel Agency. Either that or large organisations will have to set up their own Departments to deal with all that is entailed.

Retail side, there are still a lot of people like to go into shop, see glossy brochures, talk to experienced staff, though a number might then book via the internet as often cheaper to do so online.

Certainly since the wide popularity of smartphones in the past decade +, I estimate double or triple people use internet as before many did not use computers/ laptops and found the querty keyboard confusing.
Yes there is much that is now brought online as opposed to people physically going to a shop.

Travel agencies are also great for tourists with special interests or special needs.

Bit of a bugger about Thomas Cook, though. What are Leicester folk going to boast about now?

Yeah, those evil Chinese investors who tried to save the company (which was bancrupt for at least a year). Your trolling is really just lame these days, try to at least put some effort in it.
