I once shared a 2 person office for about a year with a guy with aspergers (Greta Thunberg also has this).

He was incredibly irritating, but also quite brilliant in the areas that interested him.

I truly donít care about credibility, the important thing is that last year provided awareness to all of us. Be it Greta Thunberg, Extinction Rebellion or whatever.

And that was important.

I know that without Greta Thunberg, most of the new generations in Switzerland that care about their future would still be thinking that recycling is enough.

Fortunately, they now know that's not true.
They would disagree if you credit it to Greta

Relatively neutral on Meghan, Suits was alright. She has (in?)advertantly exposed vast swathes of casual / secreted racism in the media though. Plus she (mainly due to the media) has begun the breakup of the anachronistic monolith that is our Royal Family, so well done I suppose.

Greta I like...she enrages Boomers with facts, rather than feelings they accuse millennials of being controlled by.

why do you find Greta Thunberg irritating?
She's Swedish.

You will know given your background. How is it then?
Does it come from the parents, or how do you witness it?

A lot of the youth I know is concerned for her. They don't need to be woken up to anything.

Yes, I put the same question to my grown daughter tonight. She said the same, just from the perspective of a 25 year old.

Not sure she's doing it to "wake up" the young, MC.

Not sure if every teenager is familiar with Greta's work or has any opinion on Greta, tbh.....

And kids might say what they guess Miss Prof wants to hear too. Or be led in that direction.

"Isn't it true that......?"

I find it weird and unethical (to say the least) that some teachers share what their pupils think of certain subjects to score a point on a highly politicised public forum.

I've nothing against either. They're just people.

I disagree. I don't she's got the right personality to be a true inspirational figurehead. I'm not convinced that she's tough enough, and she lacks the requisite charisma. Opinion about her, so my kids tell me, is a divided among the young as much as the older.

I certainly don't feel guilty about my hydrocarbon usage or my carbon dioxide footprint. I'm not profligate, using public transport where possible rather than the car, but we live in a capitalist society. We need capitalist solutions. Not "you've gotta use less or we're all gonna be extinct!", nor the idealistic railing against capitalism as the root of all evil. "No to ever continuing economic growth".

Back in the day similar stuff was said of Diana . I saw a documentary on Wallis Simpson . Much the same story. In the long run, such things don’t hurt the royal family. On the contrary they strengthen the royal family because , well , they show that only royals know how to act like royals . In that respect Prince Andrew has caused far greater damage, but even there , he’s sufficiently far from the throne to genuinely matter . And in the meantime the rumour mill needs to be fed. The outrage (at least as far as Megan is concerned ) is largely fake IMHO . Life goes on.

Not so sure. The people who write the frankly quite shameful stuff are given a much more widespread platform these days with the internet, which wasn't around during Wallis Simpson's time and, during Diana's time, was only a vague shadow of what it is today.

Having said that, and not even being much of a royal fan myself (I can take it or leave it but think a limited circle of royals is beneficial to the country), I find it jaw-droppingly awful to read the garbage which must be wafting around some people's heads. The hatred for someone they don't know anything about apart from the public persona is quite something.

From that point of view, I don't think that kind of outrage (although in truth I think it's less "outrage" and more "a rather nauseous embarrassment") is well placed. You have to have a screw loose to be SO angry about someone you don't know who's basically not doing any real harm to anyone. Or maybe those people need to get a life and/or a job?

But hey, "outrage" is so much more a fashionable word to use to discredit anyone in disagreement, eh?

Facts. Mmm. Nice derogative dismissal of the post war generation there. As if there were homogeneity of opinion in any group. I can point to groups of millenials who aren't impressed with the facts she opines.

It's an irregular phrase group.

She is giving us the facts.

I'm gen-X, deprived latch-key kid. I alternate between laughing at earnest youth and feeling sorry for them. Mainly the latter.

I think it's sad that a mixed race lady couldn't make a go of it in The Royal Firm. Whether it is her fault or Brenda's, that's irrelevant.

I dunno...I think the treatment of Diana (before the crash) by the Royals put a lot of people off them, as I suspect the (perceived - how the hell do we know what's REALLY going on behind palace doors) treatment of Meghan may prove similar.

I think most anti-monarchists, including myself, actually think QEII is OK (despite disliking the institution) and does a good, dignified job - the real test for the Monarchy is when she eventually passes away.

According to Polls; William, Harry and even Meghan are actually more popular than Charles. Not sure he has the charisma or support to make a decent fist of ruling.

I think there is also a certain degree of keyboard warriorism in play as well. People get into a frenzy and are egged on by people who are equally in a frenzy and end up saying things that under normal situtaions they wouldn't be saying or even thinking.

It spans across generations, though. Whether you hear it home or on a train, online or elsewhere, is irrelevant. I hear a mix of empathy and concern for her. I think representing a guilt-trip cannot go for ever, either, in terms of branding or tabloids fodder. Her entourage exploits.

Not pointing fingers at you here MC, but it does amuse me that people who started working at 15 (and quickly earning big!) and people who think kids should be allowed to work as pros are getting concerned about a 17 year old missing school and giving her scientifically backed opinion on a subject.

Gammontastic.

I think the main thing that people are irritated about is that, like her or not, she's raised the issue more than anyone else ever has.

No-one else (few people?), on the subject of climate change, has created such a talking point.

It's actually quite a show watching people fall over themselves trying to discredit her when they are just raising her profile and the issue she is building awareness for even more.

Ironically, if the detractors and critics would just stop trending her, she would just end up in the same net of anonymity as all the scientists who have been trying to raise the issue for donkey's years.

Almost Trump-esque in the climate science world.
