Looking forward to the usual suspects refuting this science-based forecast.

Meanwhile as more is learnt about the virus the World Health Organization has updated its ongoing guidance on Covid-19 medications to advise against using the antiviral drug remdesivir to treat hospitalized patients, no matter how severe their illness may be.
That's like calling KFC chicken-based. The reality is no-one knows whats in it.

Do Switzerland have a contract with Pfizer? I thought it was just Moderna and Astra Zeneca.
You are right, nothing official yet. But Berset said apparently that there is a bindung reservation.

That's what being bigger and stronger gets you.

Germany has ten times the population of Switzerland. It also has Bayer, Merck (the other one!), and Boehringer (both of them), among many other pharmaceutical companies.

Also, Germany and France are in the EU and Switzerland isn't. The EU struck a deal today for 160 million doses of the Moderna vaccine, taking its vaccine stocks to about 2 billion doses.

Being outside large trading blocs isn't always beneficial.
Nothing to do with the EU - Switzerland has ordered plenty of vaccine. As has the UK. Swissmedic have decided they will take forever to approve it - that's the issue.

I wonder if I could join the end of the queue in the uk - happy to pay to avoid the Swiss dithering.

I can't imagine Switzerland would want to play guinea pigs with it's population who are generally fitter than in most countries.
...and who have more cases and more deaths than Germany.

It's an expression of petty nationalism and nothing more.

Re: Coronavirus

On a whim I just wandered over to the Swissmedic site to see what they had to say to defend themselves. Basically nothing useful but in passing I noticed the following announcement from Monday (23rd November)...:

Quote:
Out-of-Stock – COVID-19 – Authorisations for the temporary import and distribution of human medicines – Update
- Hydroxychloroquine
- Remdesivir
(and others)
Has no-one told them that Hydroxychloroquine was taken off the list of possible Covid treatments months ago? Or that Remdesivir has also been proven ineffective? And these are the people we're supposed to trust despite them needing up to 6 months to approve an urgently needed vaccine that others are starting with in December?

I would rather interpret this as there might be problems with the supply chain due to other countries having stockpiled these drugs, and/or they might not want unscrupulous doctors or pharmacists making orders themselves. These drugs should remain available for their normal prescribed use, I totally understand the need/desire to control their import and distribution.

Well, Is SwissMedic looking for volunteers in the at-risk group to test their vaccines? I’m happy to volunteer. In fact I’d try them all ...

You have to congratulate Sweden for not panicking and indirectly killing more people than the virus itself, their excess mortality for 2020 so far seems to be 2000 more than their worst year in the last 5 years out of 90k deaths per year happening in the country

Proof that without lockdown and without useless masks for general population the virus can be controlled and managed!
Sweden's top infectious disease expert, Anders Tegnell, said Tuesday that the country has not seen evidence of herd immunity slowing the spread of the coronavirus in the country.

Sweden has seen a resurgence of the virus in recent weeks, with the rate of new infections more than doubling from earlier this year. It registered 17,265 new cases since Friday, with 15,084 new cases recorded during the corresponding period last week, with hospital admissions for coronavirus patients almost doubling each week in Sweden.

“I want to make it clear, no, we did not lock down like many other countries, but we definitely had a virtual lockdown,” Tegnell said. “Swedes changed their behavior enormously.
We stopped travelling even more than in our neighboring countries.
The airports had no flights anywhere, the trains were running at a few per cent of normal service, so there were enormous changes in society.”

Again, the stated objective for lockdowns was to reduce hospitalisations.

What does your study say about meeting the objective?

International air travel requirement once the vaccines rolled out next year

Australian airlines Qantas boss says, international air travellers will in future need to prove
they have been vaccinated against Covid-19, in order to board Qantas flights, as many airlines
reckon this will be "a necessity" once the vaccines are widely available.

BBC News - Covid vaccination will be required to fly, says Qantas chief

Does it explain Berset's et al strategy? The fact why we are still going to work, schools open, shops open, trains full?

Re: Coronavirus

Just got seasonal flu vaccine (the regular one) this morning. It was subsidized by the employer.

If we don't get the regular flu with symptoms similar to covid19, we don't have to lose time doing quarantine at home, getting a test, et. Economics matter

You may want to double check the effectiveness of flu shots.

~50% effectiveness. We're a bit above 1000 distributed in several offices in CH. If someone gets symptoms and has been in contact with others at work, suddenly 10-12 people have to quarantine for normal flu. If these cases go down by 50%, a lot of disruption for nothing is prevented.

Surely most people are working from home?
