I couldn't get through to American Airlines yesterday as the lines were jammed. I woke up this morning and found an email from American Air saying my flight scheduled for next Thursday was cancelled and to rebook online.

But when I tried to rebook, I was relocated to a page which says "No flights available" and am then prompted to call the airline! And so the cycle continues as I cannot reach the airline by phone!

I think I will take the "safe" option and remain in Zurich as there are too many variables left wide open should I try and get a flight back to the US.

Thanks for reaching out!
Try calling at 05h00, it will be midnight on the east coast and 9PM on the west coast (US on DST already) then.

Thanks! Even if I do manage to get a flight back, there are complicated issues involved with my arrival: quarantine for me, along with my two adult children who live in our house in the US and work. Also 2 of my immediate family members struggle with lung issues (cystic fibrosis and asthma). I think my travel would complicate and possibly compromise others in my family and so I have decided to remain in Zurich. Not easy, but I am sure there are many others who have it much worse!

Re: No more travel to the US!

Well the information coming out of Washington has been a little unclear. But I don’t think US citizens are subject to quarantine. They must enter the US at designated airports (like Newark and Chicago, where Swiss will continue flying) where ‘additional screening’ is present. Temperature checks etc. but you won’t be locked up for two weeks.

Re: No more travel to the US!

Trump just declared a state of National Emergency for the United States, in the speech there has been no indication that travel bans or rules have changed.

It makes one wonder if further bans or regulations on travelers will be put into place if the States are now under National Emergency?

In order to get access to funds, reportedly 50billion, the president has to declare an emergency. Nothing else changes.

Re: No more travel to the US!

I'll have to find it again, but I had an article open that said returning citizens that had been in one of the Shengen countries would be subject to testing before being allowed on the plane, and self quarantine upon arrival.

As for the approved airports, here is the list as stated on the American Airlines website:
  • Atlanta: Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  • Boston: Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
  • Chicago: Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
  • Dallas/Fort Worth: Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
  • Detroit: Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW)
  • Honolulu: Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL)
  • Los Angeles: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • Miami: Miami International Airport (MIA)
  • New York City: John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Newark, N.J.: Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
  • San Francisco: San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • Seattle: Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
  • Washington, D.C.: Washington-Dulles International Airport (IAD)

If you already have a ticket booked to the States and your first arrival point is not at one of these airports, your carrier should re-route you via one of these.

Edit - Now clearly stated on the US Embassy website:
Quote:
Travelers returning from the specified countries in Europe must stay home for 14 days after returning from travel, monitor their health, and practice social distancing.

Re: No more travel to the US!

Seems like it's his life legacy to build that wall...

He did add a moment ago that the UK might be added to the travel ban and they might remove some other European countries from the ban list. So its anyone's guess what will happen.

What about Canada?
Just-in case you missed it yesterday:

Canada advises against all non-essential travel
More from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's briefing
Jessica Murphy, BBC News, Toronto
Justin Trudeau is advising Canadians to postpone or cancel all non-essential international travel outside of Canada.

The federal government is now looking at ways to support Canadians and small businesses financially affected by the pandemic, said the prime minister.

It would be introducing a "significant fiscal stimulus package in the coming days", he said.

Mr Trudeau's address comes amid a host of new measures being taken by the government to limit the domestic spread of the virus.

All cruise ships carrying over 500 passengers will not be able to dock in Canada until 1 July.

Canada will also be limiting the number of airports where international flights can land in order to improve screening of travellers.

As of Friday, there were 157 cases of the coronavirus in Canada. One death has been linked to the virus.

A number of provincial governments have taken their own steps in recent days to limit contagion.

Ontario has closed all public schools, and many schools in Quebec have also been shut.

British Columbia and Quebec have banned all public gatherings of over 250 people.

Just sayin‘

Re: No more travel to the US!

FYI the number of airports to which Americans can enter through if coming from Europe has now dropped to 11:

Boston and Miami were removed from the list. Here's to thousands more packed in like sardines while waiting to be screened.

Re: No more travel to the US!

Geneva airport was, apparently, a zoo yesterday. Not only did you have the regular departing skiers, you had people on the inbound flights unaware of the ski resort closures who wanted to get on the next flight back home. Long queues at checkin and security.
