No more travel to the US!

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-51846923

Bye-bye my Easter trip to California! I am gutted. As usual, it's all messy, unclear (for example, what happens when you hop from Switzerland to the U.K. on the way to the US?)

And, according to experts, probably completely ineffective. Totally Trump!

Re: No more travel to the US!

Also wrote this in the other thread: You can't just go to UK and then to US. If you have been in the Schengen area in the last 14 days, then you are banned. Of course, if UK does not enact the same ban, you can go to UK, stay there for 14 days, and then go to US. This is kind of more useful, but of course you can still catch on your last day in the UK and go to US with the virus but without any symptoms, so not effective.

My idiotic homeopath crazed in-laws already told my husband we arenít allowed to visit them in May. I was preparing to give them a proper telling off today and then woke up to this news and realize any point I make is pretty much a bloody moot point now. ďWell the President banned you, so why canít we?Ē

Re: No more travel to the US!

We were supposed to go to FL & CA over April vacation too. Citizens can still travel to US from Schengen, but unclear what happens once they get there. The New York Times said US passport holders may be routed to certain airports, quarantined, etc. but no firm info. Given the incompetence of the current administration there, I would not take any chance on travel there right now.

Suspending travel from the EU is exactly what he should do until the US get to grips with the scale of the virus, which he has already been slow to do. What do personal holiday plans matter when the world is now officially in a pandemic situation and Switzerland is bang in the middle at the front lines? Be responsible and do your duty and basically put all travel plans on hold until its over.

Didn't Trump get the memo that the virus doesn't respect borders?

Who is going to fly the airplanes to UK/EI (and Romania, Cyprus, Croatia, and Bulgaria) Pilots who haven’t been in Schengen for the last 14 days. Good luck with that.

Flights from Turkey, Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Belarus, Bulgaria, and Georgia, Russia, Moldovia, if they exist, also not affected.

Where are they going to park the aeroplanes? Gander and Halifax might have some room, but much of the available space has already been taken by 737 Maxs.

Re: No more travel to the US!

My travel to US was not for a carefree vacation. Now I am left with the choice of whether to travel anyway, and take the risk of picking up the virus and transmitting to my family member with a compromised immune system, or staying here and risking not seeing her before the worst might happen. I am also not sure that I will get to her anyway even if I go, as the news mentioned being re-routed to certain airports for screening and perhaps quarantine. This morning I am filled with worry and stress over the right course of action.

Viruses from Europe: check, the flight ban takes care of that
Viruses from Mexico: check, the wall also blocks viruses
What about Canada?

Re: No more travel to the US!

The fact that he didn't ban flights from the UK means this is nothing else, but a maneuvre in his re-election campaign and problems come from outside, not from inside. It's also not a bad move, it provides him upsides in both cases. If it works: i stopped it. If it doesn't work: as i said, it came from Europe.

Call the airline. If you can go before Friday night you should be OK. Otherwise you will have to go to UK or Ireland, spend 14 days there, and then travel on. Unless you have a US passport of course.

Like many other people these days, good that you posted here and can release some stress.

My opinion - don't travel these days. Let's hope that in a couple of months we'll see an end or at least an amelioration of this situation.

Sometimes you can't do more than you do.

I agree, just sad not to go home for the first time in 8 years. I miss my Daddy...but best to keep him and everyone else safe. Hopefully Switzerland will get into better action ASAP.

Re: No more travel to the US!

From CNN
Quote:

The ban, which goes into effect Friday at midnight, does not apply to all of Europe. It only applies to those in the Schengen zone: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Travel from the United Kingdom was not included in the restrictions, and Trump said that there would be "exemptions for Americans who have undergone appropriate screenings."
Those exemptions include all US legal permanent residents, citizens and some of their family members, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security.
The process of coming back into the US will "mirror" the process of Americans and legal US residents returning from China, a senior administration official said.
Americans will be redirected to a limited number of airports that have medical screenings in place, the official said. Those with symptoms will need to get medical attention and others will need to undergo a 14-day self-quarantine, the official said.
So if you in Europe with US passport/green card, you will need to get somewhere where there are still flights, like the UK, and fly only to designated airports and be quarantined for 14 days at some military base. Better to fly to the UK , spend two weeks there, and then fly to anywhere in the US.

Of course you could travel via Canada.

Having two passports would certainly be an advantage.

I think the big worry would be that you go to Ireland with the plan to spend 14 days on the batter for St Patricks day, then the US blocks the rest of the countries meaning you're stuck wherever you've chosen your 2 week detox.

The US population may be "protected". But the people who will spend some extra hours in airports due to flight disruptions.....they'll be more exposed to contagion. Taking decisions is hard

I am in the same position as my Mom was just placed into hospice care yesterday afternoon. I found out about it last night and had planned to change my flight from next Thursday to Saturday or Sunday. I read that the CDC quarantine for Tier 3 countries is mandatory and not elective but perhaps they will clarify this in the next 24 hours.

I hope so!

Re: No more travel to the US!

This is what IATA has told its members:
Quote:

US-Europe Travel
On 11 March, US President Trump signed a Presidential Proclamation suspending and limiting the entry of all aliens who were physically present within the Schengen Area of 26 European countries during the 14-day period preceding their entry or attempted entry into the United States.

The Schengen Area comprises 26 European states: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

The proclamation does not apply to aliens who were present in the UK or Ireland, which are not Schengen area countries, provided they had not also been present in the Schengen area or any other countries covered by previous suspensions (People’s Republic of China and Islamic Republic of Iran) during the 14-days preceding their entry or attempted entry into the US.

The suspension of entry does not apply to:

(i) any lawful permanent resident of the United States;

(ii) close family members (spouses, siblings, parents and guardians) of a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident;

(iii) air crew.

There are limited other exceptions, primarily related to official US government business and members of the US armed forces.

As a consequence of the exemption for air crew, this measure does not apply to cargo carriers.

The suspension of entry for affected persons will become effective at 11:59 p.m. eastern daylight time on 13 March. However, it does not apply to persons aboard flights scheduled to arrive in the United States that departed prior to the entry into force.

The Department of Homeland Security announced that a supplemental Notice of Arrivals Restriction will be issued within the next 48 hours requiring U.S. passengers that have been in the Schengen Area to travel through select airports where the U.S. Government has implemented enhanced screening procedures.
Odile, note the last paragraph.

According to the UK Times, British Airways is under investigation by the CAA for telling passengers stranded in Italy to go into Switzerland to get a flight home. Some passengers were told to get from Rome to Zurich by road and they could then get a flight!

So is that the reason someone the other day wanted to drive into CH with a Italy reg car and drop it here?

I can put my holiday plans on hold, far less accepting of Trump's anti-Europe rhetoric to support his ban. As usual, he finds scape goats to mask his own inadequacies and incompetence.

I don't see why some people are having a problem with the travel ban?

As of now here are the relevant stats:
Italy - 12'462 confirmed cases
France 2'281 confirmed cases
Spain 2'140 confirmed cases
Germany 1'567 confirmed cases
Switzerland 815 confirmed cases

The U.S. has 987 confirmed cases. Why would anybody in their right mind encourage travel to and from Europe, when with a population of 330 mio. you managed to sort of contain it to a fraction of that of much smaller countries?!

Not so difficult to take high speed trains to Zurich airport.

I couldn't get through to American Airlines yesterday as the lines were jammed. I woke up this morning and found an email from American Air saying my flight scheduled for next Thursday was cancelled and to rebook online.

But when I tried to rebook, I was relocated to a page which says "No flights available" and am then prompted to call the airline! And so the cycle continues as I cannot reach the airline by phone!

I think I will take the "safe" option and remain in Zurich as there are too many variables left wide open should I try and get a flight back to the US.

Thanks for reaching out! :)
