No more travel to the US!

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-51846923

Bye-bye my Easter trip to California! I am gutted. As usual, it's all messy, unclear (for example, what happens when you hop from Switzerland to the U.K. on the way to the US?)

And, according to experts, probably completely ineffective. Totally Trump!

Re: No more travel to the US!

Also wrote this in the other thread: You can't just go to UK and then to US. If you have been in the Schengen area in the last 14 days, then you are banned. Of course, if UK does not enact the same ban, you can go to UK, stay there for 14 days, and then go to US. This is kind of more useful, but of course you can still catch on your last day in the UK and go to US with the virus but without any symptoms, so not effective.

Re: No more travel to the US!

My idiotic homeopath crazed in-laws already told my husband we arenít allowed to visit them in May. I was preparing to give them a proper telling off today and then woke up to this news and realize any point I make is pretty much a bloody moot point now. ďWell the President banned you, so why canít we?Ē

Re: No more travel to the US!

We were supposed to go to FL & CA over April vacation too. Citizens can still travel to US from Schengen, but unclear what happens once they get there. The New York Times said US passport holders may be routed to certain airports, quarantined, etc. but no firm info. Given the incompetence of the current administration there, I would not take any chance on travel there right now.

Suspending travel from the EU is exactly what he should do until the US get to grips with the scale of the virus, which he has already been slow to do. What do personal holiday plans matter when the world is now officially in a pandemic situation and Switzerland is bang in the middle at the front lines? Be responsible and do your duty and basically put all travel plans on hold until its over.

I agree, just sad not to go home for the first time in 8 years. I miss my Daddy...but best to keep him and everyone else safe. Hopefully Switzerland will get into better action ASAP.

Re: No more travel to the US!

From CNN
Quote:
The ban, which goes into effect Friday at midnight, does not apply to all of Europe. It only applies to those in the Schengen zone: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Travel from the United Kingdom was not included in the restrictions, and Trump said that there would be "exemptions for Americans who have undergone appropriate screenings."
Those exemptions include all US legal permanent residents, citizens and some of their family members, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security.
The process of coming back into the US will "mirror" the process of Americans and legal US residents returning from China, a senior administration official said.
Americans will be redirected to a limited number of airports that have medical screenings in place, the official said. Those with symptoms will need to get medical attention and others will need to undergo a 14-day self-quarantine, the official said.
So if you in Europe with US passport/green card, you will need to get somewhere where there are still flights, like the UK, and fly only to designated airports and be quarantined for 14 days at some military base. Better to fly to the UK , spend two weeks there, and then fly to anywhere in the US.

Of course you could travel via Canada.

Having two passports would certainly be an advantage.

I think the big worry would be that you go to Ireland with the plan to spend 14 days on the batter for St Patricks day, then the US blocks the rest of the countries meaning you're stuck wherever you've chosen your 2 week detox.

I can put my holiday plans on hold, far less accepting of Trump's anti-Europe rhetoric to support his ban. As usual, he finds scape goats to mask his own inadequacies and incompetence.

Re: No more travel to the US!

Who is going to fly the airplanes to UK/EI (and Romania, Cyprus, Croatia, and Bulgaria) Pilots who haven’t been in Schengen for the last 14 days. Good luck with that.

Flights from Turkey, Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Belarus, Bulgaria, and Georgia, Russia, Moldovia, if they exist, also not affected.

Where are they going to park the aeroplanes? Gander and Halifax might have some room, but much of the available space has already been taken by 737 Maxs.

Re: No more travel to the US!

My travel to US was not for a carefree vacation. Now I am left with the choice of whether to travel anyway, and take the risk of picking up the virus and transmitting to my family member with a compromised immune system, or staying here and risking not seeing her before the worst might happen. I am also not sure that I will get to her anyway even if I go, as the news mentioned being re-routed to certain airports for screening and perhaps quarantine. This morning I am filled with worry and stress over the right course of action.

Re: No more travel to the US!

The fact that he didn't ban flights from the UK means this is nothing else, but a maneuvre in his re-election campaign and problems come from outside, not from inside. It's also not a bad move, it provides him upsides in both cases. If it works: i stopped it. If it doesn't work: as i said, it came from Europe.

What about Canada?
Just-in case you missed it yesterday:

Canada advises against all non-essential travel
More from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's briefing
Jessica Murphy, BBC News, Toronto
Justin Trudeau is advising Canadians to postpone or cancel all non-essential international travel outside of Canada.

The federal government is now looking at ways to support Canadians and small businesses financially affected by the pandemic, said the prime minister.

It would be introducing a "significant fiscal stimulus package in the coming days", he said.

Mr Trudeau's address comes amid a host of new measures being taken by the government to limit the domestic spread of the virus.

All cruise ships carrying over 500 passengers will not be able to dock in Canada until 1 July.

Canada will also be limiting the number of airports where international flights can land in order to improve screening of travellers.

As of Friday, there were 157 cases of the coronavirus in Canada. One death has been linked to the virus.

A number of provincial governments have taken their own steps in recent days to limit contagion.

Ontario has closed all public schools, and many schools in Quebec have also been shut.

British Columbia and Quebec have banned all public gatherings of over 250 people.

Just sayin‘

Call the airline. If you can go before Friday night you should be OK. Otherwise you will have to go to UK or Ireland, spend 14 days there, and then travel on. Unless you have a US passport of course.

Like many other people these days, good that you posted here and can release some stress.

My opinion - don't travel these days. Let's hope that in a couple of months we'll see an end or at least an amelioration of this situation.

Sometimes you can't do more than you do.

Yes. People should take a more responsible attitude. Their travels could result in alot of deaths!

Please tell me it is just a coincidence!

Has anyone noticed that Mr. Tís travel ban doesnít involve any country where he has a golf resort.

Coincidence, right?
