Christopher Columbus and his crew tortured native Americans when they arrived in the Americas. They would do things like slowly burn the indigenous people and their children alive over fires until and unless they converted to Catholicism (this is why so many people in central and south America today are Catholic). The Spaniards would also steal the native Americans' gold and murder them to do so. I had to read a book about all of this in a class in university.

Growing up in the US, you learn and hear about Christoper Columbus as being a hero, but in truth, he participated in and condoned the torture and murder of indigenous Americans, including their children.

He is not someone that I would encourage children or anyone to revere as a hero.

He just happened to discover a whole new continent but that was just his side hustle I presume.

Being "a whole different era" back then doesn't mean that it should be considered okay today. The enslavement of blacks in the US and elsewhere is also a "whole different era" but that doesn't mean it's something we should be proud of.

Do I agree with the treatment that native Americans were subjected to? Absolutely not. But that should have been obvious from the beginning, I didn't even think someone could honestly doubt that. The lack of statues of Columbus won't improve their status though. (for which Columbus is not responsible for a very, very, very long time...)

Memento Park ia one of my favourite places in Budpest, and I've been there several times. Good place for photography actually.

The odd thing about is that it is ambigiuous.

You get old time communists coming on buses with their zimmer frames and nurses to worship their old time idols and sing jolly songs about crushing capitalists and how much they love Lenin, any you get random folks coming to take in the absurdity of it all. And neither group seems bothered by the other. Each only sees in those statues what they want to see. The gift shop caters to both crowds. I bought myself a cheap commie medal. The actual "educational" material provided doesn't really say much of interest (not to overstate a fine point), but if you go on a guided tour you learn much more, and I guess the tour guides adapt their narrative to the audience.

Yeah well, he got lucky because he brought a notepad and jotted down the coordinates and gave it a name.
