The "energy" was there way before corona, it doesn´t take much to trigger Americans into doing something stupid, their country has been polarized for so long with both the left and the right showing real rancor towards each other that it doesn´t take much for them to blow it out of all proportion and be at each others throats.

Was the cop trying to kill the guy because he was black? Unlikely. But would he have treated a white man the same way? Also Unlikely

There are numerous ticking time bombs in the US, not just the racial one, and it looks like they are all about to explode simultaneously in 3, 2, 1....

By-standers and the now deceased himself told him several times that the guy could not breathe, still he refused to put less pressure on his prolonged and illegal hold. If you or I would do such it be manslaughter at minimum, and we for sure would not spend the evening at our own home guarded by a platoon of heavily armed police

It does not justify the looting and plundering (which like with most riots is caused by a relatively small group from outside and a bunch of people seizing the opportunity since the windows are out already anyway), but in my eyes it does justify burning down the police station and a truckload of anger and protest and I can see a community going berserk after yet another outrageous misbehaviour. It's not a rare incident and the people are entitled to their anger.

Is it a ticking time-bomb, nah. A bomb is a one-time event. And police-force still has problems but both police and crime are less brutal than like 30 to 40 years ago. But America should mind that if economy goes down the drain completely that the old situation where youth sees no other hope to be able to buy an XboX or A car than to go into crime is quickly restored.

I don’t think he was trying to kill him. But he was trying to punish him for something. Perhaps for being black.

Sure. Because it takes a goddamn genius to figure out that if you kneel on someone's neck for 7 minutes and that someone tells you MULTIPLE TIMES that he can't breathe, as do bystanders, that you are probably going to kill him. WTF. Who cares about intent? If not murder it's obviously at the very least manslaughter.

The guy tried to pay with a fake 20$ bill and was therefore arrested AND KILLED. And the person who killed him wasn't even arrested. How is this acceptable for even a second? I'm certainly not one to throw "racism" at every little thing, and in some ways and in theory, it wouldn't even matter a massive amount whether one was black and one was white. This type of double standard is not okay, it's simply never okay. In reality, the skin color matters greatly of course, as if it had been the other way around, the dude would essentially be on his way to life imprisonment by now.

I'm with Edwin (now look at that! :)) on this one, totally understand the reaction and it was bound to happen.

Also, while racial tensions (to put it mildly) are obviously nothing new, as per usual, Trump's reaction on Twitter is to throw in some anti-democrat propaganda. When the hell is the US going to wake up to this, I'm beyond belief by now, even if I really shouldn't be surprised by anything anymore. Fully agree with slammer on this one, with the looming massive crisis, increasing tensions, and this utterly pathetic, despicable excuse for a president (who of course will be re-elected), the US is unlikely to survive, certainly not the way it once was.

Paying with a fake bill is not a capital offense. And I doubt it is a criminal offense either if he unknowingly received it himself.

I agree about the polarization and how that may be lowering the threshold to violence.

But plundering and setting fire to shops is not a form of political protest - or political violence even - but just selfish and self-serving idiocy.

Of course not. Just reinforces the absolute lack of proportionality of the policeman’s actions. In case it wasn’t clear: I meant if a black guy had killed a white guy after that one tried to pay with a fake dollar bill, he’d be in prison by now and probably never see the light of day again.

I’d normally agree that violence is not the answer. But they took a knee & were heavily ridiculed, more innocent black men and women continue to die and NOTHING has been done to stop it. Instead, we have a President who encourages white supremacy and any and all progress has just been set back 50 years. Not to mention the economic inequality only exacerbated by COVID-19, it’s a disaster.

Have you seen the video of the cop instigating the situation further by banging out windows?

I'd guess it's more about cops protecting their own that it is about skin colour

I don't think anybody was ridiculed across the board for taking a knee. Some people ridiculed it, sure. But I think by and large that's not what happened. That said, when you protest you know that somebody else may counter-protest, or twist your words, or just say something stupid. It's a bit naive to expect otherwise. Nobody has a monopoly on protest.

But what is happening now is that people are nominally blaming the president yet using that as a free pass to loot some flat screen TV or alcohol, or just destroy somebody else's business out of pure spite. That's not protest. They're ultimately hurting themselves.

Protecting themselves from what though? An unarmed man paying groceries with counterfeit money? What did they think he was gonna do, shoot them with the dollar bill?

Or do you mean protecting their own from actually being punished for the crimes they themselves are supposed to prevent or punish?
