Beirut Explosion 4.8.2020

An explosion in Beirut port yesterday - over 100 people died, thousands of injured and search continues. It is so tragic, a quarter million of people without shelter now. My condolences go to Lebanon.

Re: Beirut Explosion 4.8.2020

Yes, a Libanese friend sent the pictures this morning. Devastating.

I had a strange morning. Those pictures/news from Lebanon, birthday pictures from Nigeria and some Bosnian girls all dolled up celebrating in a bar.
My friends, so my world. I really didn't know what/how to feel.

Re: Beirut Explosion 4.8.2020

This is one of those incidents that show than negligence can be worse than bad faith.

On 2014 a ship transporting ~2700 tonnes of fertilizer (dangerous material) from Georgia to Mozambique was prevented to leave Beirut because security issues. The ship owners abandoned the ship and the cargo a few months later. The cargo was under dispute from several creditors of the ship owners. Port authorities unloaded the ship and stored the dangerous material on a relatively safer place in the port. Albeit, 6 years passed and the dangerous material was still there were a fire started. It's a mess where port authorities, customs officials and judges are just pointing fingers among them https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/lebano...rate-1.5675050

Lebanon is such a pretty country. I was there 2 years back and it seems so European for a Middle Eastern country
Pity it is stuck with strife.
Hope thinks get better.
Now I see a newsarticle that Switzerland would support in rebuilding

Yes, there was also a special on the local evening news yesterday - the director of Red Cross was explaining the rescue activity and Red Cross presence in Beirut now.

I watched a local uni professor describe the explosion, on BMF TV she said the immediate thoughts were that it was a bomb explosion since they are used to it or an earthquake, her appartment was shattered but she was so glad to not lose her 2 children and her husband.

There was a Lebanese scout teen explaining how they organise rescue and relief activities, it was moving how positive, selfless and strong that child was.

I hope people who need help are finding help, it must be a terrorizing atmosphere there right now, I am thinking of the survivors.

Lebanon never functioned well as a sovereign country.

Lebanon asked the former colonial power, France, to help sort out the mess. Hint : mess will remain.

A public health crisis in the years to come: hearing loss, tinnitus, PSTD, depression, etc. As if all people in a 2-3 km radius went to war. Not the first time this happens :/ https://www.europe1.fr/societe/15-an...longer-2958743

The pictures of Beirut look like the ones during the 80-ies.

Re: Beirut Explosion 4.8.2020

It is heartbreaking. I know that constant threat might make one somewhat resilient...but still, I can't believe the impact it had and the damage it caused, the loss of life and suffering.

Re: Beirut Explosion 4.8.2020

Some Aid is promised, but it will cover little of the damage, probably not even the immedate health & food needs.

Lebanon is institutionally corrupt - The political and economical spoils are divided along religious lines not unlike those in the Mafia.

Because distrust among sects is too big no better political solution is in the cards.

The suffering is likely to last for a long time and it could get worse.

I was saying only about Beirut, but if you compare the whole of Lebanon you are quite right...Mountains ridge with snow caps and ski resorts, plus banks...but that is faded a long time ago...
