Isn't that the point? Wealthy white old men aren't exactly representative of all the American people. Even cutting out the wealthy bit (that I just added in) doesn't widen the net much. But a black-Indian young woman on the POTUS/VPOTUS ticket ropes in a lot more demographics. I'm sure millions of Americans will find Kamala Harris much more relatable and representative than her white youngish male opponent.
Do you assume that's based on her politics or on her identity?

I agree with that. But this might be an unusual pattern as they have Trump now. The battle is not over yet but I doubt America is ready to vote for a (black) woman. And Biden's choice for his VP means exactly this imho. Time will tell.

Generally, the incumbent gets a second term. Carter did not. But no one’s quite been like this President so you’re exactly right. Time will tell.

Turnout will be key.

Both are clear strengths within this race and the fact you are trying to paint that is has to be one or the other, or in your case strongly imply through your kindergarten-levels-of-subtlety loaded questions, that it is because she is black and a woman that she has been nominated, speaks volumes about your agenda (which has been clear since the moment you joined the forum) as well as your (likely intentional) ignorance about her competency in the job she does.

I imagine Trump will either get 1 or 3 terms.

Both. Do you think Trump was elected based on his politics? Nah, it was his outsider business man identity.

I understand it doesn't have to be one or the other, but 22Y seemed confident that millions more Americans would find her relatable and I'm curious if he based that assumption on politics or identity.

There is no further proof of Joe Biden's level of decency and character that he has brought someone in as his VP who really challenged and confronted him in some debates. That's how things should be.

Trump would never, even for a second, contemplate bringing anyone in who had ever threatened him, so petty and insecure is he.
But what of Kamala Harris' character? She is on record as saying that she believes Joe Biden's accusers, yet is now happy to run with him. Add to that the way Ms Harris went after Justice Kavanaugh over similar accusations and this will be just one area of many lines of attack now open to the Donald Trump campaign.

Relateable because, in order of priority:
  1. She clearly cares about people and social justice to a reasonable degree and has proven it in multiple televised congress hearings. This is still taking into account her critics on how she has dealt with crime and prisons in California.
  2. She is clearly a woman with a keen intellect, sound judgement and a healthy dose common sense who would be capable of making tough and well balanced decisions under pressure.
  3. She is a woman currently competing at a political level dominated by old white rich men.
  4. She is a black woman currently competing at a level dominated by old white rich men who frequently do not demonstrate any care about the interests of the poor or people of colour.

She has a lot going for her and this is why a lot of people of all sexes, creeds and colours will get behind her.

What about her character? Why don't you tell us wher her running as VP with someone who she believes may have acted inappropriately signify? It was a contentious campaign issue that she took him to task for and it is now dealt with on both sides. How does this have real weight when compared to her chance to rise to VP and make a real difference in the country with a man that she still appears to, for the most part at least, have some respect for?

I really don't think you are able to see the big picture if your focus is on how things like this would stop her in her tracks from weighing up all of the pros and cons and accepting such an opportunity to make a difference to so many millions of people.

It matters not what I am able to see, only what the American voters see, and stuff like this matters in US politics. Hilary Clinton lost an election for much the same reason.

It is a Presidential election, not a VP election

When did anybody ever mention Pence, good or bad?
The VP is just a token.

After the pussy grabber won an election it is clear the American voters have a great capacity to ignore reality.

you said it yourself: old, white, rich, men.

these are the factors that get people voted in

being a woman and non-white puts you at a disadvantage.

i doubt clinton would have lost to trump if she had been a man.

that said. trump probably has the racist and misogynistic vote all sewn up anyway so maybe the impact is not so significant...

It matters when what you are able to see you are engaging in a political debate and putting forth your opinions and specific questions which specifically concern the topic of her character. You do not represent the average voting American so are just assuming that this is what they will focus on. What I am saying is that I believe that the issue of her running with a guy who she believes may have behaved inappropriately does not have great significance when compared to her opportunity to initiate change for millions of people within the country and what she represents to those people. That's what is important and that is why you cannot see the bigger picture.

I can't wait to see Harris take on Pence in a debate...she makes the toughest and worst kind of men shake in their boots & I am beyond thrilled to see what she will do with an evangelical who calls his wife "mother".

Quite pleased with Biden's choice.

Oh God, Mike Pence... this repressed puppet is going to be stuttering and stammering all the way through any debate. The whole "Mother" thing is straight out of some dark comedy movie.

But this is exactly what I wouldn't like to see from her. Women usually lose when they use the same tactics as men.

More than anything, she should refrain from going after people's religious convictions or even mention anything related to them at all. It's up to her how high she'll want to go.

I don't think Susie suggested that Kamala would go after his religious roots... that wouldn't make any logical sense to offend or even alienate all of the religious voters, right? I think she was just using evangelical as part of the description of him.
