Re: Trump or Biden .Who you got?

All four of "The Squad", the first-term Representatives who were frequently targeted by Trump and his supporters with sexist, xenophobic and/or racist attacks, have won re-election to the House of Representatives.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (New York), Ilhan Omar (Minnesota), Ayanna Pressley (Massachusetts), and Rashida Tlaib (Michigan) all won their races by huge margins varying from 38.2% to 74.6%.

Re: Trump or Biden .Who you got?

A new twist; another state comes into play. Trump's lead in Georgia (16 EC votes) is narrowing rapidly. The NYT has the margin at 0.7% (just 33,300 votes) with 5%, or about 250,000, of the ballots yet to be counted. Those ballots are all from Democrat-leaning counties.

At the same time, the Arizona (11 EC votes) race is tightening, but the other way: Biden's lead is shrinking as Trump makes some ground, and now sits at a margin of 2.8% (79,173) with 14% of the ballots -- nearly half a million -- still to be counted.

Pennsylvania remains interesting...

Re: Trump or Biden .Who you got?

I think that both senate races in Georgia are headed for a runoff - warnock-loeffler because no one has 50% of the vote and possibly ostoff -Perdue because while Perdue has 50%, he has a tiny margin.

I’m also curious about Mitch’s health....he looks like he’s on massive blood thinners (purple hands, bruise on his face). I know he must be a tough old piece of gristle, but anyway.

What a zoo.

Re: Trump or Biden .Who you got?

Remember those 375,000 rejected ballot applications in PA? This is going to get so messy in the courts. All the Trump campaign will have to do is prove a handful of dead people have voted, or a tiny amount of voter fraud to fire up their base. 4 years of Russia will be nothing compared to this!

Republicans are smarter than this. They will and they have to go for recounts in a couple of states, but they won't push too hard on the litigation side. They will create noise, sure. Fox will be all over the place with all kinds of rubbish, but they won't push too hard.

Imagine a scenario in which Trump, losing the popular vote, losing the electoral college, gets "elected" by the court? They know that the US democracy will never be the same after that precedent and the vast majority of the Republicans will not go that route. They are more likely to focus their energy on securing and consolidating the senate which seems to be falling into their hands anyway

That's a good point, I don't think of Donald Trump and the Republicans as the same beast however. I think that you're right that they will want to distance themselves from him if he chooses to pursue the legal route, however Donald Trump still has the means and the team to do that alone.

The way the split has gone with Joe Biden winning the Presidency, GOP the Senate and Dems the House is a fairly good result all round I think. It's just the closeness of the race will mean that all the bitterness remains. Trumpism certainly hasn't been rejected though.

I just had an interesting, hypothetical thought: What happens if one of the candidates wins the election, scrapes through, with 270 Electoral College votes...

... and a faithless elector (or two) votes in opposition to his/her pledged vote on 14 December?

Well, I know what would happen -- the election result would be turned on its head -- but I wonder what the consequences would be.
Yikes. That really is a frightening thought. Out of curiosity, I just looked it up and found this:

"There is no federal law that requires electors to vote as they have pledged, but 29 states and the District of Columbia have legal control over how their electors vote in the Electoral College. This means their electors are bound by state law and/or by state or party pledge to cast their vote for the candidate that wins the statewide popular vote. At the same time, this also means that there are 21 states in the union that have no requirements of, or legal control over, their electors. Therefore, despite the outcome of a state’s popular vote, the state’s electors are ultimately free to vote in whatever manner they please, including an abstention, with no legal repercussions. Even in the states that do have control, often the punishment or repercussion is slim or nothing (some states issue only minimal fines as punishment), although some states instigate criminal charges ranging from a simple misdemeanor to a fourth degree felony."

And then it lists the States that have legal control over their electors.

https://archive3.fairvote.org/reform...toral-college/

I think the entire electoral college system is designed to undermine democracy and should be abolished (and I remember thinking that back when we had the Bush v Gore fiasco). For one thing, considering the lack of laws about faithless electors in so many States and the very minimal punishment in others, what is there to prevent an elector from being paid off to switch their vote and not be faithful to the party he/she is supposed to represent?

Those are highly illegal so the chances of it happening to an elect from a member of the opposition and no-one finding out about it are low.

Very good point, I think Joe Biden's win would have been far more convincing if "The Squad" wouldn't be perceived to hold so much influence.

That's beside the point. If the system were set up differently in many states, the chances of it happening would be zero.

We will not know if the race was close until all the votes are counted, currently, Trump is eligible for fewer Electoral College votes than Hillary.

What is the difference between a win and a convincing win
The winner is the one who got the most votes, what is not convincing about that
Anyway, Joe is not yet the confirmed winner, although it is looking good for him.

PA is looking good for Biden with ca. 600,000 mail-in votes left to count which would add 20EC votes to the 264 he currently has.

I'm seeing very little movement, where are you getting your news from? I'm still hoping Nevada finishes up their count so there is some sort of confirmation.

Do you think Arizona was called too early? It looks as though it will remain Biden with the difference there being nearly too large unless there are a lot of trump mail ins.
Maybe Biden should tell them to stop counting...
