I think the US military actually preys on people in poverty. Keep the cost of college and university education high in the US, and meanwhile young kids in poverty or in middle class families join the military because it's the only way they can afford to go to college.

e.g.

https://www.todaysmilitary.com/educa...paying-college

https://yourteenmag.com/teens-colleg...ay-for-college
This is true to a point and it is how we fill our infantry and cook positions. That said the Military Academies (Navy, Army, Air Force) are harder and have a lower acceptance rate than most Ivy league schools. The added bonus is once you finish school and service time (depending on your job title) you are head hunted by every major technology company. The even smarter ones start their own Google, etc. Plus you are more likely to be C.E.O of a fortune 500 company.

Well, I think that Ivy League schools and the US military have very different criteria in regard to who they accept. I don't think that the military requires a high GPA or excellent standardized test scores, etc. to enlist. So that would really surprise me if it's easier for your average American teenager to get into an Ivy League school than it would be for him or her to join the US military.

But doesn't that only apply to a very small minority? I've never heard of most people who finish serving time in the military being head-hunted by major tech companies and/or becoming CEOs of fortune 500 companies.

Why younger veterans more likely to struggle after leaving the military
https://www.militarytimes.com/news/p...litary-survey/

"The survey from the Pew Research Center, which includes responses from 1,284 veterans collected in May and June, also found that one-third of veterans reported they had trouble paying their bills in the first few years after leaving the military, and about 40 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans believed their deployment had a negative effect on their mental health."

Back on subject...

Apparently, the two men that were arrested the other day outside of the Philadelphia Convention Center (where the votes are being counted in PA) were found to have QAnon stickers and a QAnon hat inside their vehicle as well as loaded handguns, an AR-type rifle and about 160 rounds of ammunition. They apparently were also (quote) "coming to deliver a truck full of fake ballots."

Report: Armed men arrested in Philadelphia were trying to deliver fake ballots

Joe Biden, President elect. And the world breathes a massive sigh of relief. I shall sleep better tonight. And its first woman of colour becomes Vice President.

They have done it.

This thing with the TV networks declaring the result is really weird. In a normal country one would have an official result published by an election authority, and mostly still on the same day.

I can finally let go of the breath I have been holding for about 3 months.

I hope this marks the start of a turnaround for the USA as they identify the social and political problems and start to solve them for the benefit of everyone regardless of how they voted.

As for Trump, I hope he gets what is coming to him... it will be interesting to see his reactions over he next hours and days. Biden is now officially under the full protection of the police and secret services, maybe also the army, so should be well protected and I assume Trump will start to calling him "Mr Biden" instead of "Sleepy Joe" over the coming days...

Maybe not what you meant, but one of the marketing slogans for the US military was always "see the world". Not foreign policy, but certainly one way to get people to join was to entice them to travel. In the near past, only 20% of US citizens had passports (US citizens were notoriously little traveled - that's increased now.).
Actually, that slogan is incomplete, it should read;

Join the army,
travel the world,
meet interesting people
.....and kill them

No the military does not require much if you are going to be a line cook or a ground pounder. Satellite communications on the other hand does require a high GPA and ASVAB score. The requirement, just to be an applicant to the Military Acadamies, requires a damn near perfect GPA, your entire H.S record including clubs, activities, etc better be full and perfect PLUS you need a letter of recomendation from one of the two U.S Senators from your home state before they even look at your application.
The U.S and Israeli militaries are world leaders in technology and work with R&D budgets that are multiple times larger than the combined budgets of Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook and throw a few more cherries on top. All of this depends on what your job title or M.O.S was while in the military. Some are more specialized than others.

Fantastic!!!

Interesting theory doing the rounds that Trump will resign in his last days and hand over to Pence in return for Pence pardoning him for his crimes. Although I can't imagine Trump's ego allowing him yo resign.
