Off course, it was a riot! Coup on the other hand I am not so sure, I would call it a wannabe coup by clueless, useless and dumb members of society. In future history books, I doubt it will be classed as the great attempted coup of 2021!

Meglomaniac Erdoğan and Trump do have a lot of similarities as posted in that other link. One is good at holding on to power and the other one overestimated his power

Can we spare a thought for Mike Pence? Get's given such a hard time from the media, dumped on by both the Democrats and Donald Trump yet remains one of the only calm and moderate voices throughout this whole debacle!

I think you are right as it seems the momentum regarding the Republican Party and impeachment grows by the minute. Not only has McConnell said impeachment is warranted (didn't say how he would vote however) but also Liz Cheney, who formerly backed Trump and is a high ranking Republican and very influential, has said she will vote yes for impeachment.

I think Republicans are making every effort to ensure Trump never runs again and think they will be successful
Quote:
Six House Republicans on Tuesday introduced a resolution to censure President Trump over his role in stoking last week’s violent riots at the U.S. Capitol and efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Quote:
The Supreme Court on Monday formally refused to put on a fast track the election challenges filed by President Donald Trump and his allies.
After Biden is inaugurated they can say the cases are moot and dismiss them, which shows the court is not a majority of Trump loyalists like he expected.

And as the reaction to the riot continues;
Quote:
Middlebury college in Vermont announced that it is revoking an honorary degree it presented to President Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani in the wake of the violent riot at the U.S. Capitol last week by a pro-Trump mob opposing the presidential election results.

It wasn’t a coup, because it didn’t succeed. It was a coup attempt though because they wanted to replace a dully elected president with a loser.

Now his youtube account is suspended for a while and maybe permanently.

Bet it's eating him alive, not being able to social his regular channels of communication.

And there's a surprise, he's still considering pardoning himself and his family/friends.

There is safety in numbers and this would be a win-win for them since it removes the stranglehold Trump has had over their party. I'm sure many of them are desperate to return to swamp business as usual.

Was that ironic or a spelling error?

Dully versus duly?

I will go for ironic

Trump is still incumbent president by legal recknoning.

An attempted coup attempts to replace an incumbent by somebody else.

A coup is defined as "a sudden, violent, and illegal seizure of power from a government."

The rioters were trying to seize the US government's power to certify election results and certify Biden as the winner of the election and were attempting to forcefully demand that Pence, etc. object to the certifications of the electoral votes.

Similarly, if more violent riots take place on Inauguration day in an attempt to prevent Biden from taking office and being sworn in as President, it will be another attempted coup.

I understand that it was sudden and violent, but these idiots had no ideas on seizing power. Stealing a lectern and occupying a government building does not cease the existence of the government. A lot of their slogans show they they wanted to do something, but I don't think any of them actually thought out the how.

I think there's a bit of a confusion here. McConnell will not vote in the impeachment vote in the House. He's not there, he's in Congress. It's a near certainty that Trump will be impeached in the House, but this is just a statistical fact and doesn't change anything really. He will not be removed (neither by invoking the 25th amendment, nor by removal from the Senate which requires a 2/3 majority.) and there's nothing that stops him from announcing that he will run again.

The Dems don't have the time to push this through the Senate for removal and even if they did have the time I'm pretty certain McConnell would have blocked it. Pelosi is achieving nothing really, Trump will have the badge of 2nd impeachment, but so what?

Pursue the guy in courts for tax fraud, that's how they will make him irrelevant.

Honestly, I think some of you guys just need to spend a little more time reading the news each day and inform yourselves better. There were very organised elements to the capitol riots that been discussing it online since weeks. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/w...-b1784703.html

Whether their methods were intelligent or realistic enough to change the course of democracy is not the point... it's their goals and intentions that made it an attempted coup.

Honestly, this is about as relevant to the overthrow of government as the hooligans attempting to change the results of a football game. Similar organisational abilities, similar results. Violence, death and destruction.
