The republicans didn't make up the rules. This is constitutional. They've just gotten lucky.

To compound misery for the Dems the next oldest justice by a clear decade is liberal justice Breyer (82).

I imagine there would be significant pressure on him to step down should the Dems win the election so that he can be replaced by a younger liberal judge. If they don't win - they'll be praying he gets through the next four years. A 7-2 split would probably take a century to overturn.

However he goes it'll be a shame. He's genuinely independent and one of the last remaining moderates on the court (him and Roberts really - to a lesser extent Alito.).

So what’s in the constitution is that the senate judiciary evaluates the president’s candidate, and the senate approves (or not) the candidate. But the timing is at the whim of the senate majority leader and the judiciary committee. Seems like they could standardize that a bit better. Otherwise it gives the parties too much power.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s more important to flip the senate. McConnell really needs to go. He’s a huge detriment. I’m not terribly fond of Schumer, either but at least he’s not stagnant.

Here is a video Trump himself circulated yesterday demonstrating his elderly slow walking; why he did that I have no clue.
And a video of Biden on the same ramp but quicker!
To be fair, Biden was walking up that ramp and Trump was walking down it, and it's much easier to walk up a ramp than it is to walk down one. Of course, though, I admit that Trump was walking down it rather strangely.

Also, in the first video that you linked to, I don't think Trump is walking like an elderly person back to the White House, though he probably was a bit tired.

But I do have a feeling that if Trump and Biden were to mud wrestle, Biden would probably win.

What do you think was the objective of his video showing Trump walking back to the White House? What were the positive takeaways? Why did he show it.
It is not like he came across as dynamic, energetic, or .....
Just a tired old man!

Trump has mentioned that he’d like to put a woman on the court. And he likes women better than men.
Refreshing to see Trump standing up for gender equality. You'd think the Democrats would be pleased.

I've never seen both sides as polorised as now and I blame Trump for that. A President is supposed to bring a nation together and not divide them.
Obama was just as bad for fostering polarisation, as were most of his predecessors.

I would say Obama set new levels in terms of polarization. Before that biparisanship was the normal thing.

Without Obama we wouldn't have Trump.

I would say that without McConnell’s assertion that Obama would be a 1 term president, and his refusal to move on almost any legislation advanced by the Democrats made polarization a foregone conclusion.

And bipartisanship going down the drain by the end of Bush 2.

I disagree. Sarah Palin was the first prominent polarizing politician that divided the masses. Poor John McCain is still turning in his grave for selecting her as VP and getting the ball rolling.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden leads President Trump in six key battleground states, according to a new CNBC-Change Research poll released on Wednesday.

Across Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, the former vice president nets a 4-point advantage over Trump.
Nationally, Biden’s lead grows to 9 points, up 3 points since a CNBC-Change Research poll released earlier this month.

Trump is still denying the pandemic despite contrary advice from leading US public health officials.

Bizarre that precautions against the pandemic are labelled as political.

Quote:
Trump supporters gathered for a presidential campaign rally in Ohio on Monday afternoon jeered and booed Republican Lt. Gov. Jon Husted when he tried to promote Trump-branded face masks ahead of the president’s appearance.
“If you go into a grocery store where you got to wear one,” he began before getting cut off by a chorus of boos.

If I remember correctly, democrats were getting tired of Obama trying to reason with the Republicans as they stonewalled everything put forth by the Dems. So no, I can’t blame Obama for the death of bipartisan action.

Re: Trump or Biden .Who you got?

The much-heralded and ballyhood Senate Committee report about Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden was released today, you can read it here.

Seems to be a nothing burger! Not one allegation or claim that Joe Biden did anything incorrect and nothing new reported.

No evidence provided that Hunter was corrupt as Trump has frequently claimed, strangely much of the evidence quoted just consists of links to old newspaper articles; I had expected substantial quotes from the many thousands of US Govt. documents they collected.

The report calls Hunter Biden's board position with Ukraine firm 'problematic,' but fails to show if or how it changed U.S. policy.

The report claims Hunter, like Trump, paid hookers but not connected to Joe Biden in any way.

There is a useful analysis of the report here by Politico under the title "GOP senators' anti-Biden report repackages old claims", it goes on to say it is largely a compilation of previously public information — some of it rehashed anew by witnesses who already testified during the House’s impeachment inquiry last year — as well as news articles and strongly worded insinuations with little evidence to back them up.

If I were Joe Biden I would be relieved and feel vindicated.

You are entitled to your opinion but do you have any examples to support it?

According to Pew Research
Quote:
Partisan divisions in assessments of presidential performance, for example, are wider now than at any point going back more than six decades, and this growing gap is largely the result of increasing disapproval of the chief executive from the opposition party.

To be honest, I think Trump probably posted that video because he thinks it makes him look like "The Shit" -- walking from a helicopter to the White House, and he desperately wants to be perceived as such. And of course, he also has a severe Twitter addiction and is addicted to whatever attention and sense of validation he gets from there, so he probably saw that video as just another opportunity to get some attention and likes on social media.

Re: Trump or Biden .Who you got?

Could someone please calculate the economic cost of his journey? Helicopter to Andrews, B747-200 with ancient engines flying to whereever he flew to and back then another helicopter flight back to the white house. Likely 2 to 3 hundred people involved.

And while your at it please estimate the environmental cost of this purely political trip.

Shame, shame, shame.

A historical note, Kavenaugh was SCOTUS confirmed a month before the 2018 election where the GOP lost severely
So replacing Ginsburg quickly may not be their best shot?

Who cares, they secure a conservative majority on the Supreme Court.

Good point. I also considered that maybe Trump appointing someone like Amy Coney Barrett could end up working to his disadvantage. Barrett is part of a religious 'cult' in which women are or were referred to as "handmaids" (apparently, they only decided to stop using that term after The Handmaid's Tale was released). Barrett is anti-abortion and anti gay rights. So his decision to appoint her could push away support from anyone on the right who is pro-choice, etc.

The election where the Republicans increased their majority on the senate? That's not by any case a "severe loss". Midterms are difficult for incumbent parties.

Even the house at net +41 democratic was better than the equivalent Obama election (2010) at +63 republican.

2010 was also +6 republican in the senate.
