I didn't say you shouldn't expect it at all, but it's hardly a regular situation even for a veteran politician used to keeping their cool. You are making out as though only an "average joe" couldn't stay calm in this situation, which is mis-representing how extreme it was, especially with the insults to his family which were ****ing outrageous by any standards. It was the worst presidential debate in the history of the USA and Biden did handle it where others may wouldn't have.
I was initially responding to your comment: "For Biden to even have kept his cool like he did in the face of such an outrageous display is impressive. Many people would have exploded or walked off the stage." The point is that Biden should have the qualities to handle it, it is not an exceptional quality to have as a presidential candidate, it is the bare minimum that one should be able to keep one's cool

Ok, lets just agree to disagree on the background logic there.

Is there anyone here on EF that is actually going to vote Trump?

Expressing opinions on him is as much a waste of time as you posting in this very same thread about how other people are wasting their time. People want to air their views.

Re: Trump or Biden .Who you got?

Of course, criticising Biden's performance is OK and fair in this forum.

But the reality is Trump is behind in the polls and needs to up his game to get more votes from outside his base.

Does anybody believe he achieved that in this debate and can point to his successful debating points?

Clearly, he is promoting division and encouraging his extreme supporters to violence in the future but none of that will reverse the election results (if they are against him) and confirm him as second term a president?

The White House blocked a February extension of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) “no sail” order for cruise ships, The New York Times and Axios reported.

CDC Director Robert Redfield reportedly recommended an extension of the current order, which is set to expire on Wednesday, during a coronavirus task force meeting on Tuesday.

But a senior health official told the Times and sources told Axios that Redfield was ultimately overruled as the administration plans to extend the order until Oct. 31 and then allow ships to sail.

Public health officials have reportedly said the rejection of Redfield’s recommendation is politically motivated to avoid upsetting the cruise industry in Florida, a swing state ahead of the election that a number of polls show a neck-and-neck race between Trump and Joe Biden.

This is just my take on it, but I think that the debates just solidified and further validated something that most (sane) people already knew about Trump -- that he's a bully who completely lacks empathy and decency and that he refuses to lose the election no matter what the election results bring. I think the debate went pretty much exactly as I expected it to, with Trump desperately trying to dominate the entire debate and bully Biden and make himself appear as though he had "won" simply because he was the one that was being the asshole.
But of course, his supporters won't perceive it that way, and he knows that. After all, he once said: "I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters."
I wonder how that makes his supporters feel -- knowing that Trump admittedly thinks of them as his "blind sheep." But of course, they aren't willing to admit that either.

Trump's major error was failing to condemn the white supremacist groups that his own intelligence agencies label as the highest terrorist risk in the US, this will not win him middle of the road voters.
I suspect that Trump's failure to condemn white supremacy was more an illustration of his lack of command of the English language than a genuine expression of his stance on the subject.

Chris Wallace asked Trump if he was prepared to denounce (or condemn, or whatever term he used) white supremacy. Trump seemed to say yes, then asked what Wallace wanted him to say, asking him for a name. Wallace suggested that he tell groups such as the Proud Boys to stand down. (Edit: no, it was Biden who suggested the Proud Boys, a couple of times.) Trump then duly stated that the Proud Boys should "stand back, stand by". I'm guessing prepositions aren't Trump's strong suit. Same for, you know, English words in general.

But of course, after the ensuing celebrations in white supremacist circles and the amount of time that's passed, it would now be impossible for Trump to take that statement back with the simple explanation that he "misspoke". If he has even realised by now that he did.

Agreed, any President of the USA needs the basic strength of character to stand firm in the face of aggression, whether it be warmongers in the Middle East, Khrushchev banging his shoe on the desk, or some boorish, uncouth asshole in a debate. Remember, the POTUS is also the Commander-in-Chief of the US Armed Forces. Along with the required strength of character, that's one reason why so many presidential candidates have served in the military—the current two being exceptions (along with two who won the office, Obama and Clinton, in recent years).

No, I'm going to vote Biden, probably a few times. Apparently it's really easy to game the system with mail-in ballots.

Well, well, it seems Trump has caved in to senior Republicans and the media, after all. The BBC has just reported that he has now been forced to tell the Proud Boys to stand down.

Of course, it wasn't a straightforward denunciation of white supremacy. Trump still had to claim that far more trouble is fomented by "the left" (including the mythical, non-existent Antifa) than by "the right".

I think you may have misconstrued what was said about Antifa.

(FBI Director) Wray did not dispute that antifa activists were a serious concern, saying that antifa was a 'real thing'

Can you imagine how would he have reacted if someone tried to criticise Ivanka or maybe other child of his? I don't think he would have taken it so...peacefully.

He's a human being...despite the pose and the image. Anyway, I hope Biden won't reciprocate this dirty tactic, it would be really sad to see it. He might win a few votes here and there from people who want to see a tough guy because they have this image in their head that only "tough" guys can run a country, but everyone will lose in the long run.

Btw, that Trump would hit bellow the belt must have been no surprise for anyone, and despite his mellow manners Biden is not naive.

Though actually, I think only if perceived the insult to be an insult on him. Except for Ivanka and maybe Barron, he might not rush to his kids’ defense.

All Biden would have had to have done would have been to call his kids stupid just like their dad. Boom, nuclear explosion.
