The Swiss Germans sometimes also call the Romands "Welsche".

In old German that term was sometimes also used for French speakers in general. So for example in the period that Alsace was ruled by Germany, the term Welsche was used to refer to the French-speaking minority there, possibly in an attempt to avoid calling them French and thus imply they were in a different category to the French of France.

Interesting. So Welsche isn't from Welsh -> Celts?
No, it's rather the other way round. The canton of Wallis/Valais is the 'Wales' of Switzerland, and welsche is really just a variation from Walliser, or vice versa.

I always understood that it stems from a term meaning "untrustworthy foreigner", so that it's been applied throughout history to the rebellious tribes "we" are trying to control. The Gauls for the Romans, the Welsh for the English, the Wallisers/Romands for the Schweizerdeutch, etc. etc.

I've not heard it used as such in Alsace, but it would make sense from that derivation if it were to be used to refer to residents thereof by the Germans.

Oh, and in English we still use the verb "welch", meaning to back out of a deal or arrangement, and I believe that also comes from the same source, i.e. to act like a "Welsh" person in an untrustworthy manner.

IMO, to be truely valid the source of that report would have to come from an establishment with a political bias slightly less left-leaning than the Columbia University.
Maybe you prefer the American Medical Association?

I'm not sure if I think all Trump supporters are idiots or if I just feel sorry for them, because they are clearly blind to being manipulated and brainwashed. And that's the thing -- the only way you can be manipulated and brainwashed is to either being ignorant of it or to be in complete denial.
I never understood this argument.

So they're idiots because they vote for the guy who pretends to care about them, but what's their alternative? Vote for the other guys who hate them and everything about them?

What has Biden ever said to make you think that he hates people on the right? Throughout his campaign, he has repeatedly talked about wanting to bring America together again. He is also talking about having Republicans as members of his cabinet, etc.

I'm genuinely curious: why do you think the Democrats hate conservative or right-wing Americans?

Luckily, the vast majority of those conservatives happen to be of a certain age that within a few years they will be voting in the heavens only. The current Republican party is already having, but is going to have an even stronger, identity crisis. They are bound to lose voters, it's a simple fact of generational shift.
I know plenty of republican supporters who are under 30.

A surprising amount, in fact.

I don't think most historians or etymologists agree with you. Everything I've read points to Welsche referring to the Celts, deriving from the Proto-Germanic term Walhaz, meaning Romance- or Celtic-speaker, i.e. the inhabitants of the old Western Roman Empire, which extended into Switzerland. The English word Welsh has the same derivation.

Valais (the "official" name of the canton in English, as well as French) and Wallis probably both also derive from Walhaz, although an alternative etymological theory has the roots of Valais in an old word meaning valley (the Rhône cuts through Valais). The modern French word vallée supports this alternative, but academic opinion seems to lean toward the "Welsh=foreigner" hypothesis for the origin of Valais (and Vaud, for that matter).

Well, I prefer my version

Oh, and thank you for pointing out that the river just down the road from us is the Rhône - all these years I've been wondering...

I'm sure there are plenty. For one thing, I know there are white supremacist groups who use social media to radicalize and indoctrinate young people to their ideologies.

"Racists Are Recruiting. Parents need to understand how white supremacists prey on teen boys, so they can intervene."
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/12/o...cruitment.html

Most of the teenage mass shooters in America have been far-right.

But also... If you grew up with parents who are racist, you are much more likely to be racist as well because to you, that's the acceptable norm. Also, if you grew up being forced to believe in Christianity and that abortion and homosexuality is a sin or if you're rich and grow up being told by your parents that Democrats are a threat to the family's wealth, etc.

Young minds, in particular, are easily manipulated and preyed upon. The frontal lobe of the human brain isn't even fully developed until around the age of 25.

Yep, the Rhône arises in the Rhône Glacier, very close to the beautiful, twisty Furka Pass, so it's a bit insignificant in Valais. But it does a great job of topping up Lake Geneva with lovely, fresh, Swiss mineral water before trundling off through eastern France to Occitanie, before hitting the beach on the Med.

Apparently it has twice the throughput of the Loire, which is the longest river in France, so maybe it's not so insignificant near you after all. And its glacier did a pretty fine job of carving out most of the habitable area of Valais.

Whatever, Trump should be doing something while the US is getting overwhelmed.

That's what's happening in North Dakota. Fortunately, many people don‘t have that bias. It‘s not a left or right issue. One of the biggest problems with learning about the pandemic is turning it into a political issue. Then people die a lot faster.

The only person Trump's been trying to please is himself.

You've been mentioning all that's going on in your home country now, with the pandemic. How would you feel if its leader was telling people to not worry about the virus, that it's no big deal and suggesting that people ignore science, etc.?

I have read quite a few articles about all of this but still can't seem to figure out what exactly Joe Biden has done wrong. Is there proof that Joe Biden has made a lot of money from his son's affiliations with China? And if he did, why is that wrong when Trump himself is millions of dollars in debt to China, and his son-in-law has received $400 million from a Chinese company.

Why is that something Biden's son has once done is considered a "conflict of interest" for Joe Biden, and yet Trump being so heavily in debt to China while serving as US President is not?

Trump owes tens of millions to Bank of China

[url]https://www.politico.com/news/2020/04/24/trump-biden-china-debt-205475[/url

"In 2012, the Bank of China, a commercial bank owned by the Chinese state, provided more than two hundred million dollars in loans to a New York office building that Trump co-owns... The loans will come due in 2022."
https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-c...-debt-to-china

"A company owned by the family of Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, stands to receive more than US$400 million from a prominent Chinese company that is investing in the Kushners’ marquee Manhattan office tower at 666 Fifth Ave."
https://www.scmp.com/news/china/poli...-us400-million
Let's not deflect here. The issue I raised was with Biden (and I have never voted for Trump - nor would I). There is substantial evidence of Biden's involvement as VP in his son's dealings. Whether mainstream media chooses to report on this is another issue altogether. From what I have read, Biden reaped financial rewards and was "soft" on China to boot in his role as VP. Does that sound Presidential to you?

So while Biden is the less antagonistic president, he is still is part of the same swamp. Let's not forget his cognitive issues...

PS..Mods...I figured out the EF glitch in responding to Pancake's post. Anytime I tried to respond I was sent to the middle of the thread () So I could never post... This has never happened before as typically when one quotes a thread, they are sent to the bottom of that thread... Very odd indeed and No Marton..decidedly NOT fake news
