Has anyone seen anything about how quickly the mail-in votes are being counted?

I guess I'm just trying to get a sense of how long it might take until we have a final vote count -- or even just a count that will give us a general idea of who has won the election.
For example, I think that PA has 3 days to count votes and NC has 9 after Election Day (or have I reversed this). And that's the two I sort of know. I'd say maybe late Wednesday or Thursday if we're lucky. But might take the rest of the week. Xanax and chocolate for me.

Republicans Trumpists have several cases plowing through the courts to stop counting votes after X deadline, some even midnight on the 3rd - essentially disregarding all ballots not counted by that time. Given that some states do not allow early counting of mail in ballots, it's likely that a very large number of ballots are at risk under this particular nasty machination.

I expect to see some of these cases make it to SCOTUS - where we will likely have Bush v Gore, part deux. (For young'uns who have never heard of a hanging chad, the 2000 election ended up in the Supreme Court, who voted to stop the Florida re-count, handing the election to Bush.)

The recent SCOTUS opinion that changed the rules in Wisconsin midstream, saying ballots must be received by 3 Nov rather than postmarked by 3 Nov as it has always been, could end up a grim harbinger of what is to come.

Given how behind the Post office is (my ballot is still stuck in USPS abysss! I fear my vote, mailed the same day I received it, will not get counted) who knows how many votes - thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions? - could go uncounted.

Even if there is a clear blue landslide, expect chaos until 21 January.

Whatever happens with the vote count, Trump will declare victory early in the night. And then unleash chaos.

doG I hope I am wrong.

Thanks. Yeah, I could see Trump declaring victory too early just so that his supporters would cheer him on for it and then would be all the more angry (and react accordingly) if the election does end up going to Biden in the end. Trump thrives on validation and is a master manipulator and seems to be fully aware of the effects of planting ideas in his supporters minds. So yeah, he could very well declare an invalid victory and then if the final election results do go to Biden, Trump will try to change the narrative on it and say that the final count was illegitimate and tampered with, etc. Anything to be perceived as the winner... no matter what. I don't think his narcissistic mind is capable of handling the thought of losing and being perceived as a President who was not re-elected.

Thank you. I guess I wasn't sure if to expect one week or one month (!). It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I guess I'm still expecting the worst but hoping for the best. In all honesty, I think I lost faith in the US election system (and in the US in general) years ago.

I mean I can see some reasoning to say ballots need to be received by 3 Nov, but what is the constitutional argument to stop counting after midnight? I cannot see one, and even the court is solidly right, cannot see them buying this.

But yeah, it doesn't look pretty. Florida needs to go blue at 9pm.

That said, the final NBC/WSJ poll had Trump winning 51% of the white vote. If that is anywhere close to reality, he is so done.

How did that go that time with Florida Blue, then Red, then a litigated mix of purple until the SC decided it was best to call it red and leave it at that. Then when people looked at it afterwards it was actually more blue than red and people still have doubts as to whether it could have been a gory story.

It's not like there is any urgency, the electoral collage doesn't meet for over a month ...

State laws apply and if the state laws provide that all mail ballots postmarked not later than 3 November are to be counted, then all mail ballots postmarked not later than 3 November need to be counted.

Rich lawyers getting richer ...

Here is a list of the dates on which individual States have to deliver their election results.

The earliest is Delaware (5th November) and the latest is California (11th Dec)
a number of States have no fixed target date.

I am sure after Tuesday it will be a big Trump-driven hooha!

I'm constantly surprised by the large number of people who don't realise just how conservative Switzerland is. Even the left-leaning parties here are essentially conservative. It doesn't surprise me that the average Swiss citizen automatically supports Trump, and of course, even less so that the mountain-dwellers in the strongholds of the SVP/UDC are pro-Trump.
The conservatism doesn't surprise me ... but the Trumpism does.

(Trump is anything but a conservative in the 'Swiss' sense of the word.)

20+ years in Switzerland, 16 in SZ, the very vocal Trump following - even smatterings of something akin to a cult of personality - nonetheless came as a bit of a shock to me.

Augen auf, as they say.

Perhps one of the more disheartening things I've learned in this election is that the majority of my Swiss, as in Eidgenoss, acquaintances are solidly pro-Trump. I suppose a silver lining to the rising COVID numbers in SZ is that I can now avoid those conversations by keeping social distance.

Happily, meloncollies' Swiss friends are not typical and 22y's assumption that the average Swiss citizen supports Trump is wrong. Recent poll here showing that only Erdogan is less popular amongst the Swiss. 63% picked Biden as their preferred candidate compared to 13% for Trump. 59% have a "very negative" opinion of Trump, a further 16% merely "negative".

I've seen other polls in the past with similar results.

On a personal level, almost all my own Swiss friends are against Trump.

My point is that w/o Florida, Trump's path is almost over. Florida starts counting mail ballots before election day, so they are likely to have a final count in the evening of the 3rd. Large senior population which is turning away from Trump b/c of the Covid disaster. Polls are close, but I think Biden has a good chance of winning this and then there is hoping this will be over quick.

Re: Trump or Biden .Who you got?

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report handicapper has shifted the prospects of eight House races in favor of the Democrats, predicting the party will pick up 10 to 15 seats this cycle.

Meanwhile, a federal judge in Pennsylvania on Friday issued a preliminary injunction blocking the U.S. from barring transactions with ByteDance’s TikTok, which was set to take effect Nov. 12 under Trump’s executive order.

U.S. District Judge Wendy Beetlestone argued Trump exceeded his authority by invoking his emergency economic powers to impose sanctions against TikTok by citing a threat to U.S. security.

Beetlestone wrote that the “government's own descriptions of the national security threat posed by the TikTok app are phrased in the hypothetical” and the court “cannot say the risk presented by the Government outweighs the public interest in enjoining” the executive order that goes beyond what the president has the power to do.

Every week in the Trump administration is an amateur week, he is reluctant to surround himself with experts, scientists and so, and even when some such are there he fails to take their advice then naturally falls into his own traps.

The Swiss are pragmatic enough to realise that while Trump might behave like a buffoon, the alternative is still worse.

Excepting as I referenced above, polling shows they are massively for Biden. Or at least anti Trump.

I wonder if any of them had any reservations about admitting support for Hitler 2.0?

In any case, I'm more surpised by how many wokesters move to CH despite it being a decidedly un-woke country.
