Re: Trump and first lady test positive for coronavirus

Oh man that was one weird press briefing... the doctor giving the statement was nervous and evasive on the questions and it all seemed very forced. He was clearly uncomfortable and in my opinion not telling the full truth about the presidents vital stats, blood pressure and cholesterol. Lots of rapid eye movement, voice pitch changes, hesitation etc throughout.

Trump is on the ballot in all 50 states, even if he doesn't live until Election Day. If he dies before the election, then Pence would become president.

The Republican party would then have to nominate a new candidate. Odds are that candidate would be Pence, as it would be the fastest and least complicated thing to do. Pence's name is already on the ballot, so the legal eagles could potentially argue voters knew whom they were voting for.

Some states have laws that say the electors for the Electoral College must vote for the candidate that won, but the laws are silent on what to do if the person that won is deceased.

In short, it could get messy. Article here with some info:
https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/202...election-covid

If Trump was elected and died after the election but before inauguration day, Pence would become president both in the interim and on his own term starting in January. That's because if the president-elect dies before inauguration day, the vice-president elect becomes president-elect.

Best-case scenario is Trump survives and whoever wins does so by a large, indisputable margin.
Surely we can all rest assured that when James Bond says 'This Is No Time To Die !!' he means it.

The timeline of Trumpís illness from the doctor doesnít match the timeline from the White House. And if the doctorís timeline is correct (he was diagnosed 72 hours ago), he traveled to a rally and a donor event knowing he was positive for COVID. And the responses were evasive.

I wonder if Trump went to Walter Reed early, so he could walk on his own steam.

So who knows?

Thanks. I didn't realize there was a new press briefing, so I just found it and watched.

https://thehill.com/video/administra...-gives-updates

I didn't really notice anything strange about the doctor's behavior, but he probably was nervous -- addressing the nation on live television about the President's condition. One thing that did strike me is when he said "Just 72 hours into the diagnosis now..."

Wasn't Trump just diagnosed late Thursday night, US time / early Friday morning Switzerland time? That's less than 72 hours ago. Not sure if it even matters. It just struck me as a bit odd, I guess.

Edit: Sorry for the cross-post with ennui. Just saw their post after I posted my comment. But it's interesting that we both noticed the same thing.

Re: Trump and first lady test positive for coronavirus

From the BBC

Quote:
Summary

President Trump's doctor says he is doing very well in hospital, 72 hours after being diagnosed
However, this contrasts with unnamed sources speaking of "critical" days ahead
He has been in hospital since Friday and the 72-hour timeline does not match with official announcements
If true, Mr Trump would have been campaigning at the time he tested positive
First Lady Melania Trump also has the virus and is recuperating at the White House
Ex-adviser Kellyanne Conway, campaign manager Bill Stepien and two Republican senators - Mike Lee and Thom Tillis - all test positive
But Joe Biden, who took part in the first US presidential debate with Trump on Tuesday, has tested negative
Trump, 74, has been criticised for playing down severity of virus and often spurning masks and social distancing
There have been more than 7m infections with Covid in the US, and more than 200,000 deaths

Yeah, I've suddenly been noticing a lot of those inconsistencies. Just after watching one video on one site where a guy is talking about Trumps advisers, etc. saying that Trump was in pretty bad condition when taken to the hospital, I see in the headline on another site that he's doing really well.

Apparently there was a document sent to the press pool suggesting that he was in much worse shape.

In the US, there is a Long history of hiding the severity of presidential illness.

That's what I speculated in the other thread:

It makes sense to me. For practical and optical reasons, his handlers want to get him to a place where he can receive the best care immediately.

Practically, Walter Reed is a top-notch facility where the doctors can throw everything in the arsenal at this virus, both experimental and tested.

Optically, if he were to remain at the White House and quickly deteriorate to where he couldn't walk out under his own power, that's REALLY bad optics.

Re: Trump and first lady test positive for coronavirus

I see now that his physician has released a statement about the time inconsistency, saying that he misspoke during the briefing and meant to say it was "Day Three" of Trump's diagnosis -- and that the President was diagnosed Thursday night.

I'm going to believe his doctor(s) for now, regarding his condition, but if Trump doesn't post anything at all on Twitter in the next 24 hours or so, then I'll know something is not right. I mean, something must be wrong if he can stay away from Twitter that long.

Yeah, I saw that too.

I wonder how much health privacy public figures like the president are entitled to. Yesterday, Mark Meadows mentioned HIPAA (a series of US laws which limit the disclosure of personal information in health related situations). I don't know if the president waives his rights here, and what the procedures are. I have heard many reporters mention that the Trump administration has been very opaque with respect to Trump's health.

ETA - a friend just reminded me that the HIPAA rules apply only to health care workers. The chief of staff can say whatever he wants.

The Bidens tested negative yesterday, but I wonder how often they will need to be tested.

What a year hthrough.opefully they both pull

Coronavirus: Trump and first lady test positive for coronavirus after going into quarantine

US President Donald Trump has said he and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for coronavirus and are now in quarantine.

The president, aged 74 and therefore in a high-risk group, announced the news in a tweet. "We will get through this together," he wrote.

It comes after one of his closest aides tested positive for coronavirus.

Hope Hicks, the 31-year-old adviser to the president, was the closest aide to Mr Trump to test positive so far.

She travelled with him on Air Force One to a TV debate in Ohio this week.
