I remember reading a column by Jeremy Clarkson many years ago where he was making the argument about never meeting your heroes citing Chuck Yeager as the most unpleasant man he'd ever met.

Interestingly enough the kids were talking about the sound barrier yesterday, and my husband (a scientist and an aviation nerd) was telling them about Yeager. Strange to wake up and see this news first thing!
