Another consequence of cancel culture, there's no place for comedy. | | | | | It happens that the job of TV show host and columnist depends on being popular and marketable. If the person makes the best effort to kill its own popularity, can it be called cancel culture?

| | Re: Cancel Culture | Quote: | | | | | | | | | | When I grew up men used to be a bit more stoic, or even proud of facing challenges. Book authors talking about going to other country to say what could not be said in country of origin. Cartoonist showing with pride in a book far what could not be printed in the newspaper. All this resonated when I read something from a Swiss author (Dürrenmat) talking about not being incisive enough to be censured or prosecuted unlike one of his uncles who spend a night in jail for a text.
These days men complain a lot. Was it a 20th century thing? Authors being proud of getting in troubles for changing the world? What happened to the provocateurs? Did they simply became old and whiny?
In the specific case of Terry Gilliam, he makes the best to be charming and connect with staff in lower positions and income. | Quote: | | | | But last month The Old Vic announced it was calling off the production amid reports that some staff were unhappy with 'controversial remarks' the director had made.
Gilliam has now addressed the cancellation his Facebook page saying: "It is very sad that a great cultural institution like The Old Vic allowed itself to be intimidated into cancelling our production of Into The Woods by a small group of closed-minded, humour-averse ideologues on their staff, who absurdly, call themselves 'The Old Vic 12'...as if they are the victims of some cruel injustice desperately fighting for their freedom! | | | | | | This user would like to thank Axa for this useful post:

| | Re: Cancel Culture
Maybe "cancel culture" is a side-effect of the internet and social media. Prior to the rise of social media, I think people were less strongly opinionated and less openly expressive and assertive of their opinions. So of course, people had opinions back then, but they weren't necessarily going around screaming them at the world through a virtual bullhorn... and certainly not for "likes" and thumbs-ups. And due the internet, the world has essentially become hyper-connected.
What I don't understand is when I see people trying to blame "cancel culture" on liberals, because I have seen plenty of Republicans doing the same thing. One example is their attempt to boycott Disney for being "woke": Florida Republicans condemn 'woke' Disney, urge more boycotts by conservatives against the 'activist machine https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics...ervatives-woke
"Florida GOP members of Congress railed against Disney for advocating against the Republican-led "Parental Rights in Education" bill and signaled that the Orlando vacation destination may see boycotts from conservatives for its political activism."
Trump also once asked people to boycott Coca-Cola, Delta, etc. because those companies had spoken out against Georgia's laws restricting voting access.
So anyone on the right who claims to be against "cancel culture" is nothing short of a hypocrite unless they also claim that it's wrong when it's done by those on the right.

| | | | | Similarly, Harry Potter books were banned (cancelled?) in parts of the US because of the spells and witchcraft. | Quote: | | | | Before the new school year began, the Rev. Dan Reehil turned to several exorcists for advice.
Reehil, a pastor at St. Edward Catholic School in Nashville, Tennessee, was worried about the heretical lessons that students could learn from the Harry Potter books, he wrote in a Wednesday email to faculty members that was obtained by WTVF. At the advice of the exorcists he consulted, who shared his concerns, he purged the series from the school's library.
"These books present magic as both good and evil, which is not true, but in fact a clever deception," he explained. "The curses and spells used in the books are actual curses and spells; which when read by a human being risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text." | | | | | Imagine being so gullible that you think you can magic up your own Patronus... | The following 5 users would like to thank ShirleyNot for this useful post:

If anything I would say it is worse with younger, educated people. However this culture has spread and is now prevalent everywhere across the West. The best way to define it would be people actively looking for excuses to be upset or offended.

| | Re: Cancel Culture | Quote: | | | | | The best way to define it would be people actively looking for excuses to be upset or offended. | | | | | Well maybe it's a symptom caused by people going out of their way to think of ways to upset and offend others. Why else would you publish an article trumpeting about your "cellular hatred" of a woman and your dream to parade her naked round the streets whilst being pelted with shit.
If you think people aren't going to at least squirm a bit about that, it speaks more about one's own upbringing than anything else.
All this bull about freedom of speech is nonsense in this case. It's just unnecessary nastiness and I hope the "younger and more educated" end of the spectrum see it for what it is and let it die off with the angry and bitter end of the spectrum.
I guess the only explanation is that those that are freedom of speech absolutists have just painted themselves into a corner which means they basically have to defend every example of shameful, depraved and sick outburst in order to save face.
