The Political Compass

Thanks to a question from NomadAmericano yesterday, I've been questioning if my political beliefs have changed at all with age. By pure coincidence, a good mate posted The Political Compass questionnaire on fb.

I first did this questionnaire back in 1982 at college, then in around 2004 and again last night. What I've found is that I'm not as far to the left as I was in my teenage years (which I kind of expected), but have become more Libertarian. My result places me slap bang next to Bernie Sanders and I'm happy with that. The guy resonated with me.

Something that did surprise me however, is that most of the mainstream US and UK political parties fall into the Right wing / Authoritarian sector.

If you would like to take the test...

https://www.politicalcompass.org/

My results are shown below along with an interesting chart that puts Hillary further to the right than Theresa May.

Re: The Political Compass

Virtually no political party representing the Libertarian, and nothing for the Libertarian right. This explains a lot about the recent swing in Western politics.
The individual is the most important minority of all.

Re: The Political Compass

About (-7, -7) - right on Chomsky's nose. I get farther down in that left hand corner as I age.

One thing about the certificate and the graphic - the heads are plopped down in the correct quadrant, but their actual placement is aesthetic rather than reflective of their positions.

https://www.politicalcompass.org/certificatetrail?

I find this rather misleading. Suppose I am at (-4, -4) and someone is at (-1, -1). Does both the sign and magnitude matter equally? Does a (-1, -1) have more in common with (1,1) or with (-4,-4).

But amusing none the less.

Yes, that would explain why there is so little political debate here.

If you go back to the UK parties in 2010 (down the left hand column) Lib Dem was right libertarian under Clegg, or there's Ron Paul in the US 2012 election and Michael Badnarik in 2004.

Flawed survey! To more than half of those questions I answered like 'whatever', 'I don't care' or 'really?!'. Why am I forced to agree or to disagree?

This thread should be renamed - the survey is UK oriented.

I thought it had more of a US feel to it with that weird section on religion.

And I am in a deep pit (-6.5,-7.64). Probably because of Monday.
And I don't even get a personal idol to put his poster on my wall.
