| | Re: Trump - post Presidency thread | Quote: | | | | | It's getting even more hilarious.
"A controversial new bill that would stop tech companies from deplatforming politicians has been approved by both houses in Florida's legislature.
The bill must now be signed off by Trump ally, Governor Ron DeSantis.
The legislation allows platforms to suspend accounts, but only for 14 days, and could fine the platforms as much as $250,000 per day for violating the law."
"The bill includes a clause that exempts a company "that owns and operates a theme park or entertainment complex" - which allows Disney to be exempt from this bill.
Florida is home to the Disney World theme park.
NBC Miami reported some law makers saw this as "hypocritical".
"If Facebook buys a theme park, does that prevent us from being able to regulate what happens on Facebook?" asked Andrew Learned a Democratic member of Florida's House of Representatives.
"So, if they bought a theme park and named it Zuckerland and he met the definition of a theme park under Florida statute, then yes," said Republican Representative Blaise Ingoglia." https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-56952435 | | | | | Sometimes, I feel that Florida itself is a fantasy land.

| | Re: Trump - post Presidency thread ‘Anglo-Saxon’ ideals show pro-Trump Republicans ‘Want to become extinct’ according to George Bush.
If such trends continue, Bush said, in three to five years “there will be no party.
If the Republican Party represents exclusivity, you know, they used to be country clubs, now it’s obviously white Anglo-Saxon Protestantism, then it’s not going to win anything. “
----------------------------------------
Clearly a large group in the GOP want to live in a past ruled by Anglo-Saxon ideals that maybe never existed, probably that is not the best way to get majority support at the polls as the US becomes ever more multi racial and multicultural.

Would be a solution for the big techs to stop accounts to all FL residents before the legislation passes.
What amuses me is that they are introducing the pro-authoritarian measures they project the left will introduce.

Some CNN images of how it looks when you stop building the wall.
Will they leave it like this? Who knows?

Poor Giuliani "America's Mayor" is like so many that were tarnished by association with Trump. | Quote: | | | | Rudy Giuliani on Monday said that federal prosecutors are trying to "frame" him due to his support for former President Trump, who employed him as a personal attorney. | | | | | Sooner or later the FBI will reel him in. Then likely the prospect of prison will have him, like Michael Cohen, turning in the Trump family.

Nowt so strange as folk! | Quote: | | | | House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) confirmed on Tuesday he rented a room from GOP pollster Frank Luntz during the coronavirus pandemic, news that was first reported by [Trump fan] Fox News host Tucker Carlson the night before.
Carlson had suggested on his eponymous show the night before that the Republican leader might be violating House ethics rules by "living with a lobbyist for Google." | | | | | McCarty's salary is ca. $200K annually so he does not have to share a place?

New from the front! | Quote: | | | | A federal judge has ordered the Department of Justice to release a March 2019 legal memo that advised then-Attorney General William Barr that the special counsel's investigation did not support prosecuting former President Trump, issuing a scathing decision that accused Barr and department lawyers of deceiving the public.
The DOJ had argued in court that the full memo, portions of which have already been released, should be withheld because it fell under exceptions to the public records law for attorney-client privilege and deliberative government decision making.
District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson said on Monday that those claims were not consistent with her own review of the unredacted memo nor the timeline revealed by internal emails among top Justice Department officials. | | | | | Will be interesting to read what the memo actually says.

Sooner or later the FBI will reel him in. Then likely the prospect of prison will have him, like Michael Cohen, turning in the Trump family. | | | | | If Guiliani runs out of money it will pressure him to dump on Trump. | Quote: | | | | Rudy Giuliani’s allies are reportedly pressing former President Trump’s team to help the embattled lawyer pay for his growing legal bills. Giuliani’s advisers are pleading with Trump’s team to dip into its $250 million campaign bank account and pay the attorney for the work he did to try to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The NY Times reported, citing people close to Giuliani and Trump, that Giuliani was not compensated for the work he did after the election.
Giuliani’s team increased the pressure on Trump’s camp, the Times reported, after federal prosecutors executed a search warrant at the lawyer's home and office as part of an investigation into his dealings with Ukraine. Giuliani is also the subject of defamation lawsuits by two voting machine companies, Dominion and Smartmatic.
Bernard Kerik, the former New York City police commissioner, wrote on Twitter that “lawyers and law firms that didn’t do shit were paid lots of money and the people that worked their ass off, got nothing.”
“I want to know what the @GOP did with the quarter of $1 billion they collected for the election legal fight,” said Kerik. | | | | | There were rumours that Guiliani's divorce in 2019 ruined him financially.

That is a relief | Quote: | | | | Facebook's ban on former President Trump’s account will continue following a decision issued by its independent Oversight Board on Wednesday.
"The Board found that, in maintaining an unfounded narrative of electoral fraud and persistent calls to action, Mr. Trump created an environment where a serious risk of violence was possible," the board wrote in a statement. | | | | | Just one hook "The panel is requesting that Facebook review the decision to develop a "proportionate response that is consistent with the rules that are applied to other users of its platform."
"Within six months of this decision, Facebook must reexamine the arbitrary penalty it imposed on January 7 and decide the appropriate penalty," it said."

Trump is complaining that facebook is violating his 1st Amendment rights.
You would think he knows that the 1st enjoins governments from adopting laws that limit freedom of speech. It doesn’t prevent businesses from doing so.
What a moron.

However, I do know that Americans have an odd habit of continuing to apply titles to people even after they have left the office where they aquired said titles. So all former presidents of the USA are still addressed as "Mr President", "President Carter" , etc. (similarly for vice presidents, as well); former judges retain the honorific "Judge", too—famously, there was a recent member of cabinet who insisted on still being addressed as "Judge" even though he was no longer serving on the bench. I don't remember who that was... Calling 3Wishes!

But compared to the Austrians, it's nothing. Sorry, only in German and even for German speakers rather bizarre.
Melania sent the Queen a message, starting with "the President and I" and was tarred and feathered for it. It must have been on EF or I wouldn't know about it either. | The following 2 users would like to thank curley for this useful post: | |

"President Trump and I" would have been marginally OK; OK for Americans and a bit weird for non-Americans. "The President" is obviously reserved for the person that Putin picks.

The U.S. Department of Justice expressed concern Wednesday about ballot security and potential voter intimidation arising from the Republican-controlled Arizona Senate’s unprecedented private recount of the 2020 presidential election results in Maricopa County.
In a letter to GOP Senate President Karen Fann, the head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division said the Senate’s farming out of 2.1 million ballots from the state’s most populous county to a contractor may run afoul of the federal law requiring ballots to remain in the control of elections officials for 22 months.
And Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Pamela S. Karlan said that the Senate contractor’s plans to directly contact voters could amount to illegal voter intimidation.
