I've not read all the responses, but for what it's worth I think he was an awful man whose cynical shock-jock style did much to capsize US politics and create quite unnecessary and destructive divisions.

Susie, yes sober now but this hangover... omg

I actually read melloncollie post and I loved it. In such elegant way her comment spoke about human absurdity, the Rise of a one man and his verbal brutality and fall of a nation ...

Then at the end of it, I felt as if I was manipulated , there was something quite inconsistent and it did sound as fanboying..

I expected you as a gutsy woman who knows things to reply to that... something like "hmm , tea party, quannon , are evil, really ?" what did they do so bad that can beat the tragedy of Flint,Michigan? and who's behind that misery? A Big Corp. ? protected by different administrations , how come they're never put on first as the "evil" or the bad guys .. ??

I thought you'll explain to meloncollie how Rush is just a manufactured project put there to pollute , divide people , create hate .. Which even Roscoe Pound explained how by using the principles social engineering through laws(in this era , media , tech business) are used as a means to shape society and regulate people's behaviour.
Why I'm saying this? Again, because Limbaugh was there because some big guys who participate in the business how to shape your opinion, define who's your enemy, orient you who'll you hold responsible for the regress.. never ever do things "by accident" ,.. it's not by accident how the network that had this show belong to Bain Capital and oh by accident never took it off , as if they didnt realise how "destructive forces" will take over .

Bottom line, some people here love to play that game, liberals vs republicans ... left-right politics , while it's obvious and clear how there's only Top VS Bottom.
Take some coconut water & ginger it helps.

So much empathy means there's a relevant standard for empathy. A higher standard unattainable for the crowd. Thus, the main motivation to talk about it is self-righteousness.

But, it may just be sarcasm as MC implied. Who knows? Only words, no winks, no timing in word delivery, no inflections in the voice, no body pose, no eyes....quite hard to tell.

The calls for empathy (posted elsewhere, posts that often got more than just one thanks) I'm referencing have been posted by some posters in this thread, posters who show none at all themselves here. The threshold those posters are to meet is their own, it's the one they themselves attempt to impose on others whenever it suits them.

You are right that this is about self-righteousness, just not my own but of those posters. Of course it's also about double standards and hypocrisy.

As for virtue signalling, that doesn't apply here but you might want to look it up anyway.

I'm confused. I can't work out what you're referring to. Just spell it out please. Are you saying that you thought Rush Limbaugh was a force for good? He was an extremely manipulative man who caused a lot of unnecessary trouble by spreading 'fake news'. For instance he vehemently claimed that smoking was not a cause of lung cancer when in fact lung cancer killed him - and he was a heavy smoker. He also spent years railing against drug use and addiction, being extremely critical of those who had such problems. Then in recent years he finally admitted that he himself was a chronic addict of prescription medicines and attributed much of his sociopathic behaviour to his addiction.

If you are not from the US you may not have heard of him, because he wasn't speaking to those outside. No, he was speaking to, and building, what has now become 'The Base'. His impact on the US political landscape was immense.

Limbaugh laid the groundwork all those years ago for the politics of hatred that has taken over our country today. His radio show - commentary served with a big ol' dollop of venom and tribalism - reached millions and influenced many millions more. His show gave voice to, and validated, the destructive forces we see today. His show let the genie out of the bottle. Without his show sowing those seeds there would have been no Tea Party, no Trumpism, no Qanon.

Heck, without his influence, we might even have stayed a somewhat civil society functioning in a more or less fact-based universe, able to disagree with a modicum of respect and engage one another somewhat constructively. Without his influence, bipartisanship might even still be a workable concept rather than a dirty word.
Rush did not create division in the country. There was always a political division that was buried because the TV news (that lean left) would report the news one way unanimously. Rush gave a voice to people who were the silent majority and were being ignored. In the 80s and early 90s when he was at the Zenith of power, he literally had no viable competition to discuss conservative talking points. As Fox News and other conservative commentators rose to power, his influence waned. (although as an OG he always remained relevant)

There were tons of left-wing "Rush's" back in the day but they all failed miserably because they are not saying anything new that isn't already being said in other forms of media.

PS. comparable example: Stern, Howard

I say nothing to that end, neither for nor against. You probably know that already, after all you've read my posts. Presumably.

You describe a man with immense double standards, a hypocrit who essentially saw himself as something else than the ... the peasants. Based on your description that seems an acceptable position.

I posit that the same standards you apply to him are to be applied to the woketivists (maybe the identify as feminists) who demand empathy whenever it suits them, but would never in a million years reciprocate, least of all in a case such as this, as evidenced by a good many posts in this thread (also elsewhere). Their double standards and vile in this thread are no less despicable.

It stands for "Original Gangster". It is kind of a term of endearment for a person who is an original or a pioneer in a field
