Sun-dimming experiment ??

As you have all heard it probably by now, .. the biggest philanthropist in the world Bill Gates is enthusiastic about global dimming and is financing this project The earth must be saved , it's urgent .

‘Solar dimming’ geoengineering would inject sulphur dioxide particulate matter into the atmosphere, thus creating a human-caused ‘cloud’ to dim the incoming warming effect of the sun, to counteract human-caused global warming, which Bill Gates claims is causing a ‘climate disaster’ in the title of his upcoming book.

I'm grateful we live in such times where we have this amazing people trying tos save the earth . It's scientifically proven how this is going to be useful and efficient .

Some skeptics say how there are strong reasons how this should not be done...
they say, 1. Solar Radiation Management Doesn't Address the Real Issue , 2. Risks Far Outweigh Potential Reward 3. Solar radiation management would likely affect different parts of the world in different ways, some positively and some negatively.

What to think?

Re: Sun-dimming experiment ??

Geoengineering is a fascinating topic. I think Gates is right in that we shouldn't exclude any technologies from being potentially part of the solution. This includes controversial stuff like nuclear and geoengineering.

If that can be tested properly and at small scale, I would be open. My belief in the world really cutting emissions to the level they need to be is ... shaky.

The sun-dimming with large panels might be preferable to spraying their atmosphere with aerosols. Whether this is feasible with all the scrap flying in orbit, I don't know.

Re: Sun-dimming experiment ??

The question Komsomolez is : how come you're rather going for the experiment , which is quite meaningless than having doubts ?

Seems how science , corporate science is like a religion or God in the previous centuries.. It's a heresy to doubt even their 'good intention' . this is what shocks me )

Re: Sun-dimming experiment ??

Wait, what? Isn´t injecting chemicals into the atmosphere the plot of "Snowpiercer?"
Anyway the sun is entering the grand solar minimum which is expected to last until 2050, this alone will cause a global cooling effect, probably not enough to combat climate change but perhaps enough to give politicians and captains of industry a reason to ignore the problem.

Yeah, sure, do an other thing, of which you don't know the long term side-effects to cover up the past things you didn't know the long term side-effects of (and when you did you didn't bother).

Just do.not.change.your.lifestyle.and.habits, not the tiniest bit even if it wouldn't really hurt you to. Who needs natures perfect interaction which we still hardly understand as we can do it all better anyway.

Do I need to put a ? Yeah, I probably do

I have and it was not full of surprises to me as you seem to think?

Nina Jablonsky in the film had the same message I posted, only phrased it mannerly and non-sarcastically:
<<Seeking technological fixes one after an other is just gonna lead us to an other level of catastrophe. >>

You picked a great subject but it's not for EF. It will not lead to the necessary discussion.
So all I'm saying here is that as long as we try to safe our life-style instead of the planet ....

Oh, and somebody asked for automatic curtain openers in an other thread just a day or two ago. You know what I mean?

If climate change is caused by humans, the solution is simple too. Destroy or reduce the number of humans on this planet

Re: Sun-dimming experiment ??

The idea reminds me of the Saurer Regen (acidic rain) which caused the Waldsterben (forest dieback, death of the forests). The twin weather phenomenon dominated the headlines in the 80ies and well into the 90ies, along with the Cold War and Reagan's Star Wars (later on the demise of the USSR and the fall of the Berlin wall), pretty much like climate change does nowadays. With the difference that the models back then had predictive power.

Fossil fuels back then contained a significant amount of sulfur. Burning them produced SO- and SO2, sulfur dioxide, along with the well-known CO2. Rain dissolves it and produces H2SO3- (sulphuric acid) and H2SO4 (sulphur acid), IIRC and subject to details, turning it sour/acidic. Sour rain harms the trees, and has the potential to kill them over the course of a few years, which produced the headlines.

In order to combat this problem, Europe (I guess the US did likewise but don't know, California may well have spearheaded much of it)
- forced the introduction of the catalysator
- mandated the introduction of unleaded fuel (leaded fuel destroys the catalysators), so the lead poisoning of the environement got also largely eliminated
- reduced the fuel's sulphur content over time
- "dirty" brown coal was replaced over time by less dirty black coal and natural gas

Yet here comes Mr Gates and wants to re-introduce SO2. Of course it'll be dispersed in the stratosphere, above the troposphere where our weather happens, but still, this couldn't feel more odd and ironic.

Lead is pretty nasty once in the body in many ways, some obvious (lead poisoning, romans have a story or two with their lead pipes), some not so much. It was back-correlated in some studies from 70s and 80 IIRC that I can't now bother to look for, that lead overall increased aggressiveness, impulse behavior, heck they even linked it to ADHD. When looking at the incarceration stats they saw big drop after environment got +-cleaned from lead by using unleaded gas.

As to Bill's idea, I don't get why, when they want to shroud the earth a bit, they don't just use some high tech sheet, which would reduce sunlight passing through for say 5%, or whatever would help. Put it in place far enough between sun & earth and keep it there actively. It will disintegrate from radiation & meteorites eventually even on its own. And once we decide we don't want it anymore, just move it a bit. And not pumping some chemical crap in our freakin' atmosphere...
