This planet was not built for 7.9 billion people. Maybe not for even half that number.

That probably depends on how they want to live.
AFAIK, the average person in the US uses 50 times the energy (and resources) than the average person in Bangladesh.
I doubt this planet can sustain 5b people living like Swiss or US-Americans...
It's all easy talking about reducing the population, as long as "the others" are meant...

Man made Climate Change is a real issue that needs to be confronted and addressed in an appropriate and proportionate manner. Climate Change Armageddon or "Climate crisis" is just fear mongering nonsense that doesn't help the situation and leads to lunatics like Extinction Rebellion getting air time.

| | Re: After the Pandemic comes Climate Change armageddon says Attenborough | Quote: | | | | | I like it - therefore if sea water can be cheapily turned into drinking water ( no doubt more reliable than depending on a
constant annual rainfall to maintain reservior levels ) then the rising sea levels caused by the melting polar icecaps
in the North & South poles; could be offset by many countries tapping into to sea water to supply more drinking water,
shower, land irrigation & bath water to it's citizens. | | | | | I am curious, where do you plan to store that water after you used it?

“The world is going to end in 12 years if we don't address climate change.”
I actually think it's a good thing we are waking up as energy security is critical and renewables will be cheaper than fossil fuels.

I´m wondering if the economic consequences of Corvid will be used to overturn efforts to curb climate change.

| | Re: After the Pandemic comes Climate Change armageddon says Attenborough | Quote: | | | | | The question is a simple one: " Can we do anything about it realistically?" | | | | | Even if we don‘t know, does that mean we shouldn‘t be trying? There are so many places to start.
Less is often more. Our consumption habits are wasteful, as they are in most rich countries. If some statistics make Switzerland look good, that’s because they fail to take into account the grey energy for the goods we import from the Far East. Fast fashion is a problem. Zurich alternatives: 2ndpeak.ch, thenewnew.ch, rework.ch, chemiserieplus.ch, caritas-secondhand.ch and many more available everywhere, such as Patagonia, Hessnatur, Changemaker or Avocadostore. We have a teen at home so we‘re working on it :-)
Plus, Switzerland‘s fleet of cars consists of the heaviest, most luxurious vehicles in Europe. And no, that’s not due to the mountain dwellers; your average Alpine farmer drives a sensible Subaru. Safe bike lanes would be a huge improvement and allow seniors and schoolkids to get regular exercise in the most efficient way possible, and not just the young kamikazes that Zurich‘s pedestrians love to hate.
As for Swiss agriculture, it is is hidebound, if you‘ll pardon the pun. We can produce almost the whole amount of meat and dairy we eat inside the country, but not nearly as much fruit and vegetables - which would generate both more calories and less CO2, as well as fewer pesticides and nitrates. By now, we all know about glaciers melting, but did you know that the Baldeggersee has been artificially ventilated for decades? The idyll is often superficial. But farms are usually passed on within families in Switzerland, and farming families traditionally feel represented by the SVP. Need I mention the votes in June? 3x yes if you can - thanks!
Somebody mentioned nuclear power. While that‘s better than gas in terms of carbon emissions, fuhgeddaboudit. Even a massive push for renewables stands a better chance, though/because Switzerland is far behind most neighbouring countries with solar and wind. We figured hydro put us ahead of the field. That was true, but it has made us complacent. We can and must do better. There are miles and miles of unused rooftops ideal for solar power generation. And that‘s just the low-hanging fruit. Wind is more difficult here but I‘ve never understood why. Not even Landschaftsschutz Schweiz fights every windmill.
The same person mentioned gen-mod crops. While I appreciate the theory, it‘s often ugly in practice. Farmers getting sued for plants sprung from their neighbour’s seeds. An unhealthy dependence on global corporations with more power than either small farmers or their governments. Did you know that a mind-boggling estimated one third of our food is trashed instead of eaten? I‘d suggest taking on food waste first. There are many good initiatives, see foodwaste.ch.
(And to state the obvious, we haven‘t set foot on a plane in years.)

I beg to disagree: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/risin...090000627.html Seems to be limited to the US. The south coast of England is crumbling in several places, too. Here‘s one: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-dorset-28898711 And... Venice? Are those super-duper new flood gates working yet?
My favourite „Curse for Jewish Republicans“: May you sell everything and retire to Florida just as global warming makes it uninhabitable. (Yes, it is that old - dates from the days when they didn‘t call it climate change yet.)
