Petition to have a wasted PCR test fee refunded in the event of Flight cancellations

Who would support a petition to have the full cost of your PCR test ( the one you present within 72 hours of your planned arrival in the UK ) or any other country that requires the same; refunded in the event of a flight or ferry cancellation ? At present this cost is excluded from your rights for refunds of all other travel costs that arise in the event of a cancellation and as you know the PCR test is expensive ranging upto £210 pounds which times this amount within a family of 4 equals upto £840 lost in the event of a flight of sea ferry cancellation.

Well someone has to pay, if not the traveller who should that be.

Let me see now ABTA, the airlines, the hospitality & tourist trade sector or a consortium of the above, who say
they are desperate to raise confidence in international tourism & business travel; to get people flying again
without the pitfalls that are frankly stopping them from flying again once the travel bans ease.

For them the initial cost would hopefully be recouped by bums on airline seats as the sector picks up and as PCR tests
are likely to be a temporary measure until full innoculation or a state of relative safety emerges across the world following
the pandemic.

OK, but I think you need to be a little more specific.

Actually I think the only solution will involve a vaccine passport, but that is another discussion.

As this mornings announcement from the UK Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps said the fact is that even those people
who have been fully vaccinated, could still be 'carriers of the virus and even worst a variant of it' and so 'to be sure'
even vaccinated people, will have to undergo the PCR tests and any other necessary Covid tests to prove they
are negative before travelling.

Therefore its not unreasonable for other countries to think the same.
The latest guidance is that further studies will have to be carried out before Govts are confident that a
vaccinated traveller cannot pass on the virus. Therefore until a conclusion is reached PCR Tests
and Covid tests will be included for vaccinated travellers.

Re: Petition to have a wasted PCR test fee refunded in the event of Flight cancellati

Ever since the news of Covid-19 darkened our lives, it's been clear that - at least for quite a while - travel ain't gonna be what it once was. Hence the calls to stay at home, the many cancelled flights, and the quarantine regulations, and lists of countries. Anyone who travels nowadays surely must know that they're taking a risk by mixing with more people from more places (in airports, on planes, on ferries) and thereby very possibly increasing the likelihood of infection, and also must know that their flight might, as so many before, be cancelled.

Whether or not one still chooses to travel is another discussion altogether (since some people really do have a pressing business or personal need to do so), but the costs of choosing to participate in a very unstable travel market... no, I don't think these should be covered by the airlines, the shipping companies, the struggling hospitality sector, nor the government(s), but by the traveller. Admittedly, having to do so doesn't exactly raise one's confidence in the whole business of travelling.

It's ironic that short flights are in problems. The shorter the travel, the fraction of the total spending going to the PCR test is higher.

Long flights were the test is 10% of the total, it doesn't matter that much.

72 hours is enough time to take an alternative flight, its not like it needs to be 4 hours before departure.

In the UK people are reporting incidents of booked private Covid test kits delivered late or not at all.

BBC News - Covid: I'm on day 8 and no Covid test has arrived

So if the airlines would jump in and cover the costs... make an educated guess who pays it in the end.

I had a wasted ocr test as my Christmas vacation destination was out in the high risk list a day before I planned to fly... it sucks. But the last thing I want is that airlines now set up their massive bureaucracies to cover the costs of tests for people who are affected by flight changes. Because flight tickets already got more expensive without any of that.

I wouldn't be that bothered if they didn't send the tests - doesn't seem the government chase up the results - you just need to have purchased them to get into the country

Yes you could sum it up as box ticking before takeoff and landing at your destination in the UK ( eg last year ) with the final step being

after leaving the airport or seaport 'please proceed to your designated place of self-isolation' do not stop at shops or supermarkets or call on friends & family along the way. If you are caught short by a call of nature - do it behind a hedgerow where nobody´s looking or if your call of nature layby is busy with other customers, then try and maintain at least a 2 meter distance with facemask on at all times if encountering a busy hedgerow.

Once you have arrived at your designated place of self-isolation for 14 days and find the fridge and the larder bare of necessary food items, then
logon to the internet and order it online for home delivery. Also be sure to
wait for the man from the ministry, border force or a passing policemen
to knock on your door to make sure you haven't sneaked out in the meantime.

And here I was feeling slightly guilty for asking a struggling airline to refund my cancelled flight ... knowing that every penny they will have to refund will affect their hard working staff who are innocent in all of this.

Anybody who books travel at the moment is taking a risk when doing so.
The airlines are having a hard enough time as it is and I don’t really see why they should be responsible for the PCR test costs.

this is why greece is pushing for an israeli style green pass.
This is how the interest in sparking travel again is manifesting.

Airlines don't have money rn and such a bureaucracy would only cost even more money.
People are avoiding pcr destinations outright.

Re: Petition to have a wasted PCR test fee refunded in the event of Flight cancellati

If the airline cancels your flight then they should compensate you, say with a voucher to use on a future flight.
Or your Cancellation insurance policy, if you have one. These policies cover you for associated costs when your flight is cancelled.
Also the cost of these tests is far too high. Airlines and airports should be working with test providers to make them more affordable.
