RIP Shirley Williams

the best PM we never had- always think how the UK would have been if she rather than Margaret Thatcher had been PM.

Huge respect for this woman- never shed a tear before at the death of a Politician.

Realistically she was not in the same league as Mrs Thatcher, she should not have defected from Labour if she really had aspirations to be PM

Labour had been anti common market in 1975, had they retained their stance they might have won the last election!

Who?

Tom
One of the founding members of the British Social Democratic Party in the early 1980s, which later morphed into the Liberal Democrats.

I'm not sure she would have had the degree of toughness needed to be a PM, and in retrospect I think I agree with fatmanfilms that she could have got further by not defecting from Labour. But most people who were around in Britain at the time - including political opponents - will surely remember her with respect as an unusually sincere and selfless politician.
