Have to ask the question how they even knew he was on the flight? Was he being watched 24/7? Because I doubt they'd have access to the passenger info from Ryanair.

Apparently he texted a friend to say he was being closely followed at the airport.

I'm surprised that this individual can matter to them so much that it was worth pulling off something like this, which must have taken a taken a huge amount of preparation, coordination, not to mention costs.

Unless it's just flexing of muscles to show the world that they can.

Anyone who spent time in Belarus would realize this is a perfectly normal reaction by this regime. Sad situation for those stuck in this beautiful Country run by a madman.

Re: Ryanair plane forced to abort descent and forced to land in Weissrussland

plane was 70nm from exiting the airspace .. I am quite sure pilot contacted ground in destination as well as Ryanair airline control themselves - wonder whenever recordings are still available or 'service' erased these .

Taking into account it was closer to Vilnius and it had all in the computer and airport approach path - there was absolutely no reasons to change the airport except Vilnius could not accept the airplane.

Pilots must been in huge stress ... only option would have been cut off both engines power and call "mayday" - and it's not they would be let alive or force crash the airplane killing all on board.

I don't think pilots knew that wanted man was on board. After seeing fighter jets you probably just follow the orders and not thinking of some manoeuvres including engine cut-off.

I guess we are going to hear what the story was once recordings are available.

No pilot expects military on emergency freq. call you to abort descend and taken now route when your target airport already assigned you landing approach/path/runway/slot - so they clearly knew at this point there is something wrong

Not an aviation expert, but they were still in Belarus air space, so I don't think they got any clearance for landing at destination airport yet.

Re: Ryanair plane forced to abort descent and forced to land in Weissrussland

As I understood from the media it looks like he went for some event in Greece. If you closely monitor a person I guess it is not that hard to find out the route being taken and you don't need Ryanair records for that.

A large percentage of flights landing in Geneva/Zürich receive their landing clearance over France, or Italy, or Germany, or Austria

One thing is for sure airlines are going to avoid Belarus airspace from now on. That will hit them in the pocketbook as well.

Are we talking about the same Ryanair?

They would be more likely to rename Minsk airport as Super Vilnius O'Learygrad.

And introduce a special surcharge for being hijacked.

Well, lets see if the EU are finally kicked into action. A flight from one EU capital to another is highjacked by a third state.

My bet is they will do nothing...

Malaysia Airlines 17 in Ukraine, hijacking in Belarus. That part of the world looks risky to civilian aircraft.
