Re: January 6 US Capitol Insurrection

I just read in the news that the "QAnon Shaman" (guy with the horns) was just sentenced to 41 months in prison for his role in the January 6th attack on the Capitol.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/jacob-c...ttack-capitol/

Apparently, while in custody, he underwent psychological examination and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

(I can't help but wonder how many other QAnon members might be found to have schizophrenia if they underwent psychological evaluations).

The lawyer for Jacob Chansley, who is known as the “QAnon Shaman,” said on Wednesday that his message to former President Trump was to take care of “the jackasses that you f----- up because of January 6.”

A reporter asked Chansley’s lawyer what "appropriate accountability for former President Trump" would look like, according to Mediaite.

“I’d tell him, ‘You know what? You’ve got a few f------ things to do. Including clearing this f------ mess up and taking care of a lot of the jackasses that you f----- up because of January 6.’ In the meantime, I might talk to him about some other things that I'd agree with him on. But my opinion doesn’t mean s--t,” he added.

My comment
A lot of the defense lawyers for the rioters took the defense that their clients were simple people misled by Trump.

My college best friend's brother is one of them. Somehow he's managed to be highly functioning and successful in his life, but has always dealt with a number of mental health issues. It is sad to see how hateful his beliefs have become under the ruse of being a "Christian patriot". Especially dumbfounding because he is Mexican and a child of a former illegal immigrant (now US citizen). He's blocked me on FB now as I couldn't help but challenge him on every single post he's made.

I was finally blocked by him when Texas didn't turn blue during the last election ... he wrote a post bragging about it, and I simply copy/pasted the completely blue voting map of the city he lives in (Dallas) and wrote: "Move to the country".

Re: January 6 US Capitol Insurrection

Federal judge Amit Mehta suggested Friday that former President Donald Trump had some responsibility for the January 6 attack on the Capitol and that rioters were pawns provoked into action.

Speaking at the sentencing hearing for rioter John Lolos, the judge said rallygoers like him were "called to Washington, DC, by an elected official, prompted to walk to the Capitol by an elected official." He called individuals who stormed the building "a pawn in the game played by people who know better." "People like Mr. Lolos were told lies, were told falsehoods, were told the election was stolen when it was not,"

Seems some establishment Republicans are growing a spine.
Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel on Thursday acknowledged President Biden's electoral victory over former President Trump, marking the first time she has explicitly said Biden won the contest a year ago.
"Painfully, Joe Biden won the election and it's very painful to watch. He's the president. We know that"

US Dept. of Justice surprisingly taking action against the first of the people who disobeyed subpoenas from the Congress committee investigating Jan 6.

A federal grand jury has indicted Steve Bannon, the one-time White House adviser to former President Trump, after he failed to comply with a subpoena from the committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

Bannon now faces two charges of contempt of Congress, one for failing to appear for an Oct. 14 deposition before the panel and another for refusal to provide documents.

Bannon is claiming executive privilege over his conversations with Trump which implies there is something to hide.

Sentences for the rioters are getting more severe, Jan 6 rioter who assaulted a police officer gets 41 months in jail.
The judge has set a trial date of July 18 for Bannon's two charges of contempt of Congress so basically, nothing will happen if the GOP wins the House next year.

Re: January 6 US Capitol Insurrection

A federal appeals court Thursday unanimously ruled against former President Donald Trump in his effort to block his White House records from being released to the House select committee investigating January 6.

However, the DC Circuit Court of Appeals paused its ruling for two weeks so that Trump could seek a Supreme Court intervention.

Possibly if this case is ruled in favour of Congress then it will render similar cases based on Trump's executive privilege like Bannon's moot, hopefully so but this is my speculation, not a legal opinion.

Re: January 6 US Capitol Insurrection

Yesterday the Congress committee released text messages from the trove shared by Meadows that showed lawmakers, aides, and even Fox News hosts pleading with Meadows who was Trump's chief of staff sitting in the White House to press Trump to take stronger action against the rioters in the Capitol.
  • “He’s got to condemn this [shit] Asap. The Capitol Police tweet is not enough,”
“We need an Oval Office address. He has to lead now. It has gone too far and gotten out of hand,” Trump Jr. texted.
  • “Hey Mark, the president needs to tell people in the Capitol to go home … this is hurting all of us … he is destroying his legacy,” Laura Ingraham wrote.
  • “Please get him on tv. Destroying everything you have accomplished,” Brian Kilmeade wrote.
  • “Can he make a statement? … Ask people to leave the Capitol,” Sean Hannity urged.

The number of people arrested and charged in connection with this is now up to 762, more than 220 people face charges for assaulting and impeding law enforcement.

The civil cases against Trump, Guiliani and others are scheduled to be heard next month.

The DC AG has launched civil cases against the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers and other groups in the hope of recovering the costs involved.

Doesn't matter how many foot soldiers are going to be indicted. The key development is the evolving evidence how "lawmakers" suggested to overthrow elector confirmation, how Trump did nothing to stop the Capitol takeover, and maybe most importantly how Trump leaned on GA to "find votes".

Evidence of an attempted coup. If properly documented, argued and hopefully charged - great material for having principled independents and conservatives vote for dems in 22/24.

Re: January 6 US Capitol Insurrection

A federal judge denied a legal challenge against the heaviest charge that has been brought against Capitol riot defendants, upholding the felony count that federal prosecutors have relied on in the months since the attack.

Allowing to move forward with the obstruction of an official proceeding charge against 17 defendants affiliated with the right-wing paramilitary group the Oath Keepers.

The longest prison sentence issued so far is 5 years for assaulting police officers. Prosecutors recommended a shorter sentence after the defendant repented in court but he later launched a fund me campaign which had statements that the judge decided negated his repentance.

The House select committee investigating the deadly January 6 riot has asked GOP Rep. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania to voluntarily sit down for an interview -- the first known effort by the panel to talk to a lawmaker about helping former President Donald Trump in his efforts to undermine the election.

Meanwhile, the famed US democracy is suffering "bigly".
Five Republican candidates for governor of Minnesota were asked at a forum last Wednesday whether they thought President Joe Biden won a "constitutional majority in the Electoral College." None of them was willing to utter a plain "yes."
From conservative Alabama to the swing states of the Midwest, numerous Republicans trying to win party nominations in 2022 have joined former President Donald Trump in refusing to publicly admit that Trump just plain lost.

Re: January 6 US Capitol Insurrection

In one of the most prominent cases against far-right groups that the Justice Department alleges planned to storm the US Capitol on January 6, Matthew Greene, 34, New York member of the Proud Boys has pleaded guilty to felony charges, including conspiracy and could provide vital information to the government's investigation as he's expected to cooperate

Michael Flynn, ex Trump national security adviser has swiftly lost his bid made in court yesterday to block a possible House select committee subpoena for his phone records and to hold off demands he speak to the panel investigating January 6, the judge threw his case out today. No doubt there will be appeals.

Re: January 6 US Capitol Insurrection

The US does have more than a fair share of extreme eccentrics

Capitol Police officers on Thursday arrested a Michigan woman who they said showed up outside the department's headquarters with multiple guns, including one that was loaded.

The woman illegally parked her car in front of Capitol Police headquarters on Wednesday afternoon, saying she "wanted to talk about information she had about" the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.

The woman, who has been identified as Kery Lynn McAttee, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of unregistered ammunition, unlawful possession of a semi-automatic rifle and unlawful possession of a firearm, police said.

The firearms recovered from McAttee's vehicle included a loaded Mossberg .410 caliber shotgun, an unloaded Remington Nylon 66 .22 caliber rifle and an unloaded Connecticut Valley Arms .50 caliber muzzle loader.
