David Amess MP - Murdered

Just seen the news from the UK - an(other) MP has been murdered whilst holding a meeting in his constituency...

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...tuency-surgery

It's a tragedy that the UK has become this polarised and dangerous.

RIP

Dreadful yes, shocking yes, unexpected unfortunately not. There seems to be far more people with uncontrollable anger around these days.

So we can expect the full Jo Cox on this - a married MP and parent, senselessly murdered. Who am I kidding. The left will be telling us it was an inevitable consequence of Tory policies, and at the least that vile creature Rayner has blood on her hands.

I don’t know if Angela Rayner’s words had an affect on this guy - but they certainly could have!

Re: David Amess MP - Murdered

I just read through the article in the link... Forgive me for asking what might appear to be a stupid question, but I noticed that the word "surgery" is used in British English in a way that I don't think I've seen it used before. It says that he was killed "during a surgery" and that it happened in a church.

Can someone please tell me what the word "surgery" means exactly, in this context? (I apologize if this post seems a bit off subject...)

It’s when MPs meet with their constituents so that they can discuss issues they are having. Normally held in their offices but this one was in a local church.

That’s pretty despicable. Political point scoring while the married MP and parent’s body is still warm.

The fact that you think in this manner is part of the problem… how did you get to be like that?

I have no idea where else it is used, but it is the word used in Ireland as well. In Ireland members of the upper and lower Houses of Parliament hold meetings at various locations in their constituencies during the month so that people can go and talk to their representative in parliament.

Some people come to discuss policy and provide feedback on the job being done, seeking support for local issues and others because they don’t know where else to go to get help or they think their PM will have more impact of government departments:
- filling forms for pensions and grants
- seeking answers from government departments
- and so on

I think politicians in general, not just Rayner, definitely need to be aware that their words can cause actions. We can see that quite clearly from Trumps words and the attack on the Capitol that they led too. Angela can be very aggressive, she ought tone that down for everyones sake.

For non UK speakers, the word 'surgery' is also used for a doctor's office, in a different context.

I was once made an appointment with my MP by the local Citizens Advice, because the issue I asked for help with was outside of their powers. My MP's surgery office was adjacent to the Magistrate's Court building. He did a damned good job too.

Looking at what we know now about the man in custody, I doubt this is the case. We shall see...

What I'm wary of now is how Patel responds and what changes she tries to introduce. MP surgeries are essential for many people, but there must be a better way of making them secure.

The answer from the Jo Cox Foundation:

''We are devastated to hear the news of the death of Sir David Amess MP. We send our deepest sympathies to his family, loved ones, staff, and colleagues.
All elected representatives deserve to be safe, and to be treated with respect. Violence and abuse against them is utterly unacceptable. It endangers people and their families, and it endangers democratic life.
The Jo Cox Foundation is committed to working towards a future where no politician is subject to violence or intimidation.
The Rt Hon Jacqui Smith, Chair of the Jo Cox Foundation said: “This is a tragic loss for those who knew and loved Sir David – my heart goes out to them. I knew him as a generous and dedicated colleague in Parliament. Public life must be safe for those we ask to serve in our democracy – that is a responsibility for us all. “
