Germany should ask itself why so many of the most talented and hard working young Germans prefer to move to Switzerland.

This story made me think about the individual on EF griping about how we're helping Ukraines, but not Syrians/Afghans. There were no Ukraines caught rioting incidentally.

For the same reasons many Afghans and Syrians want to go to Germany, better money and better prospects. The key difference is that German migrants coming to Switzerland are in the vast majority highly skilled and can speak the language. Ironically, almost all education and vocational training comes at the expense of the German tax payer, so viewed from this perspective, somewhat of a lose-lose situation for Germany.

Understandably this story is starting to gain a lot of international attention, especially in Switzerland. An interesting interview in 20min (German only) this morning from a Zürich Judiciary Director outlining the differences between Swiss and German approaches to migrants and why we're unlikely to see the same issues in Switzerland.

More disappointing to see is that there are now calls to ban fireworks in Germany as a result of the unrest. Aside from the argument of a few idiots ruining fireworks for everyone else, this call does seem to rather miss the root cause of what happened.

I have to admit that Switzerland is doing the same and that the people here are afraid of speaking out because they will be labeled as racist/unwelcoming.

My friend (an immigrant herself) moved to a different area of Zurich so that she could rent an entire house with a large yard for her family. The schools in the area are heavy with families from a migrant background. Within three days, she had to remove her daughters from the school and at a great expense, move from the area.

Her daughters had rocks thrown at them on the playground and were regularly violently and verbally accosted and spit at by boys from a certain area of the world that is not known for allowing women to have freedom of expression. The teachers have often had to fully segregate classes from boys and girls and were also regularly violently attacked themselves. They admitted that they had completely lost control of the situation and nobody from the authorities was coming to help.

When she told me this, I simply could not believe it and wondered why you don't read of such instances in the news or why you don't hear residents speaking up about it. My friend is an avowed liberal herself, but she cannot deny the reality of the situation.

If you look to the Nordic countries like Norway and Denmark, their integration system seems to be far above what we have further south.

As you’ve mentioned before, Denmark and Norway as well have implemented far more successful immigration restrictions / policies. This has in turn led to to stable, successful and more tolerant integration.

sounds terrible for your friend. its even sadder for the people who don't have the means to move away from such 'vibrant' areas.

Somewhere in Zurich City, but close to nature / a forest as that was her reason for moving there ... I do not recall the exact whereabouts - been meaning to ask.

i think they do. but they are often ignored or dismissed as racists. and as for the media...there are different theories.

To be fair, there are areas in Denmark where this also could have happened. No idea about Norway, and Sweden for sure is worse. At least the Danes call these areas what they are.

We've moved on from then even if a few Germans haven't.

Can't people comment on here without a multitude of groans? If the business meeting was in English then I wouldn't describe using the word "negro" as "uncomplicated".

Would it have been just as acceptable if a black person had been sitting at the conference table too?
