This happened from June to December 2022 and was about 1k M-16 knock-offs that were classified as 'hunting weapons,' plus some body armor and drone parts. The loophole is that they are dual-use, in that they could be ostensibly used by private citizens or by military personnel. It was clearly a test-the-waters situation, and not long after there were frequent reports about China doing just that.
The change in reporting on this situation is the second most interesting part of this, as it could signal the political will to challenge the situation or prepare for a ramp up in Chinese shipments. It could even be further bluff calling.
The most interesting part is that the equipment was shipped through Turkey. Their status as an ally of dubius faith isn't new, so I'm curious if that part will even be brought up further or swept under the rug.
