I would say that unless you know fully what was occuring your are in danger of making a false allegation of racism, and this kind of soundbyte trial is pointless. Also this is 3 years ago when he was a kid for gods sake, how many kids don't make a verbal gaff at that age, and Harry promptly appologised for his error.

If this kind of labelling is 'acceptable' anyone who has said: I'd kill for a beer, becomes a murderer, and heaven forbid the photographer who goes out to take some shot's of people, or called someone a silly b4startd in jest or banter actually think they are illegitimate.
Hello Papa, I would profoundly disagree with this I have to say. Kids make "verbal gaffes" but there is a very significant difference between racial insults and phrases like "kill for a beer". It is accepted that the latter does not meant literally, whereas the former almost always is.

There isnt a rule or science about what is or isnt acceptable that I can think of its just, well, how its received. For example due to my folically challenged nature on a football field the term "bald b*****d" has been used frequently. it doesnt really wind me up, i laugh it off. IN many times it is used in jest. Replace bald with "black" and it comes a hard hitting racial slur and I cannot think that that would be interpreted in any other way than a severe racial offence.

I think it is more than a harmless piece of banter by a junior prince. Using those terms implies that the individual does have grievence with a particular racial type in my opinion.

I would and do take exception to racism, I just don't see it everywhere... or go looking for it. I certainly wouldn't take My Paki friend (said as a comment in a home video with a group of friends) as racist, but would if the camera paned to a person and then Paki b4stard was used, maybe I'm just more relaxed than the zero tolerance crew who want to lynch a silly, over privilidged kid for an indescreet comment.... maybe people should stop looking for an insult that was not intended..... maybe.

In the UK it is considered terribly racist:
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Paki
However the word "Pak" is not and is often used by non-Brits as an acceptable shorthand.

Erm...have you actually watched the video???

He doesn't say "My Paki friend" he says "OUR LITTLE Paki friend" and he doesn't say it among a group of friends he says it alone filming at a distance without the other guy hearing.

He can apologise all he wants there was definetly racist intent (despite the spin Buckingham Palace are trying to put on it).

I quite enjoyed watching this video and don't see anything offensive in it. I even thought he said it quite nicely, that little phrase.

Oh my god I must be racist!

I found some aspects of the video rather amusing.

The part where he is on the phone (apparently to his grandma) talking about the Corgis and saying God Save you is hilarious.

The so called racist comments are clearly tongue in cheek. I see no issues with them.

Thanks, but we tried just that, and the media kicked off and they brought the little bugger home... seems he can't win..... unless he keeps his trap shut.

I do not understand the fuss. There is a big difference between a racist and an eejit and Harry, just like his Grandfather, is a royal one..

You miss my point, I did not label him in any way. Regardless of how the comments came about, it is a fact that if left unchecked it will continue to promote an environment in which racism can flurish. If a team leader at work made a reference to one of his team as "his little....." would this also be OK?

Jim.

Yeah I agree. I can't take things like this at face value, I have to try and think of it in a context. Much as I hate racists, I simply can't get myself worked up about Harry's use of the word in this context. Maybe he uses it in overt racist contexts as well, but I'm not going to assume that, I'll just judge him on what I know.

Personally I get more irate about the so-called mate who has passed this onto the media. And also with the News of the World for pretending that their reason for publicising this was borne out of some high-minded public duty! Give me a break! Both the friend and the paper were driven purely by greed. And all the media, with their endless discussions on the issue, have lapped it up accordingly.

I'm glad I don't live in a world where I can trust my friends not to go selling my every indiscretion to the newspapers....and even if I couldn't the papers wouldn't be the least bit interested!

Re: Racist prince harry uses the p-word

What might be worrying is that calling people a rag-head is an acceptable part of army banter. It would be great if someone would post a clip of some of the names Prince Harry might have been called in the army, like Nazi, in-bred, professional parasite, ******* son of a gingerhead, pot-head. I'm sure that he would love it. I wonder if they would be arrested for treason, or would it be put down to just larking around. Someone must do a skit, maybe Harry himself?

Let's face it, it's in the genes - the Duke of Edinburgh is notorious for his faux pas:

Of course, the DoE doesn't notice he's making a faux pas; he probably doesn't even know what one is.

Careful now, old bean - you nearly misted up my monocle!
I rather had in mind the bit from Hot Shots Part Deux with the 'prisoner tv interview' with the hand signals...

Re: Racist prince harry uses the p-word

Seems to me very much like a Buckingham Palace PR damage limitation exercise. Who can seriously believe that this part is true?

"The two soldiers were said to have exchanged stories with each other about fighting the Taliban when Harry rang Khan to apologise."

Also the fact that they might have got to know each other and become "friends" doesn't mean the comment wasn't racist. "Sooty" also says that he is a friend of prince Charles yet it is still a racist nickname.
