Blindness or Myopia?
Just to put some context on it - this is a forum of expats (seemingly with not much to do in the day) not a G20 meeting of heads of state. People can put their ideas forward or whatever comes into their minds and as long as it's not offensive or way off topic it's fine.

Some of it is funny, some of it informative, some of it thought provoking and some of it complete billy bollox but at the end of the day does it matter?

Zzzzzz. No one suggested people should stop having kids full stop. I'm sure even if you ask "stop reproducing" and "genocide" guy, he'll tell you he meant limiting the number of children or was just kidding, but if you want to check, take it up with him. You're lumping posters together, and it's quite blatant trolling.

I think some education for the men might not be such a bad thing as well. It wasn't that long ago in our culture, that women were constantly having babies. Due also in part, to men not educated enough to realise that practicing some constaint, at least after childbirth, was good for the woman and the family and even the community.
Ultimately, the baby decision comes down to women. That's just biology.

Re: UK population must be cut to 30m

Now there appears to be some thinking.

I doubt any radical shifts will occur unless it is a necessity. Most of these opportunities will surface with crisis. Hopefully, when faced with such crisis, people will look for solutions that guard the sanctity of human life, instead of approaching the problem as if humanity was a culture dish of micro-organisms.

Thanks for the turn in direction.

More importantly, the only person who suggested compelling people not to have children was Patxi, who I'm assuming was (mostly ) joking.

Nev, Anthropogenic Global Warming is still not proven, and up for debate in the next room.
Apologies to Russkov if I misquoted.
But in terms of global warming didn't this thread kick off in the context of comments by Porritt about population and it's environmental impact and that the answer to global warming is some kind of population control?
Apologies to Phos for staying on subject!!!

If that were always true. Unfortunately too many women still have no say in family planning. In some cultures now, as in ours in the past, men had certain rights that there wives were obliged to honour.

Sorry, you are right. Porritt's comments seem to be in the context of AGW. It somehow blurred into areas of sustainability.

Re: UK population must be cut to 30m

I find this thread rather disturbing.

The UK could take a leaf out of Switzerland's book, where life is so good, no one can be bothered reproducing.
And there are an awful lot of old folk around, so who's going to fill in for them when they go....??

Problem solved. (or not)

Re: UK population must be cut to 30m

I don't think this Porritt guy who started this all off was advocating castration, abortion, a halt in reproduction, a cull of the herd or any of that stuff. He's simply saying that if you want to have kids, stick a two!

Here is what he said:

"see if we might persuade (please note, persuade, not coerce!) the 26% of women in the UK who are currently expected to have more than two children to ‘stop at two’. (The other 74% already do stop at two, or have one child or none.) If we did this, we would be able to cut our forecast population by around 7 million people.....and if we then applied ourselves to doing more or less the same for women the world over.... without fear of oppressive religious and male-dominated constraints, then we might just be able to stabilise world population to something closer to 7.8 billion instead of 9.2 billion. And just work out what that means for climate change, the planet and all future generations."

If you're interested here's the link to his site:

His full comments are under the heading "sustainable population"
