UK population must be cut to 30m

According to this article,
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle5950442.ece

"JONATHON PORRITT, one of Gordon Brown’s leading green advisers, is to warn that Britain must drastically reduce its population if it is to build a sustainable society. "

How the hell does a country go about cutting the population in half?

Dissolve the union.

It won't reduce the population by half, but it will get rid of all the annoying ones...

Easy, put that border in at the Watford Gap. Then we can have North and South England.

Keep them going on their diet of chips, pies and beer mixed with a lazy-arsed lifestyle and the problem will resolve itself in a generation...

Over population will be a huge problem soon. Don't know how to go about reducing the population but I think there is a necessity to control it.

I would bet that Jonathan Porritt is a card carrying PETA member, and maybe even a disciple of Ingrid Newkirk.

We can be turned into leather goods.

The problem is, I don't see how one can go about it in a way that's the least bit humane. Large sum payment to women who choose to get sterilized? One child per family law like in China? Closing the borders? I mean, they can cut tax breaks for families with more children (which I assume exist), but that's just mean.

Yes, it is just weird that reducing popul. in Europe will mean older pop. for some generations which is not favorite for countries.
Otherwise, no doubt most of the world is overpopulated.

Re: UK population must be cut to 30m

I don't ever see it happening. I see the reverse in fact, in times of stress it's a human instinct to increase numbers.
People would have to have some sort of philosophical revolution, en masse, for any change to happen. But as I say, it seems to be against animal instinct to not procreate, so chances are slim.
I wonder, what is human saturation point for planet earth?

It a ridiculous statement to make without providing any backing. Besides, the UK has about 60 million right now, right? I would ask is what the hell J. Porritt is talking about. Without backing, the statement can hardly be taken seriously. Or should we all just start planning because he seems to be a scientist?

Your country needs to lose 30 million, my country has the opposite problem:

I moved out and plan to never have kids, they must really hate me.

Australians face UK visa tax

expected to be up to £50 ($A106) and levied on applicants from outside the European Union

Re: UK population must be cut to 30m

I never understood why we can't control the population size of any country. Poor people make plenty of babies. Then people are getting way too old. Whole civilizations get uprooted and move elsewhere. In short it is a bloody mess. Why are we so many all of a sudden anyway
