So, did anyone notice the "lights out" (Aktion Licht aus!) campaign this evening (8pm)? Did anyone participate?
Yes, we did it in the restaurant in the Red Factory. We decided that as it was an international action that we should take part. Although as an "action" I found it pretty lame. Now, making people walk to the nearest source of water (which in CH is not really all that inconvenient, what with water gushing from practically every street corner, but never-the-less... ) and carrying home all the water that they would need for the day would have done more in raising awareness than 5mins of semi-darkness. Most people didn't really realise what was going on although a few applauded ...
Like we'd really done something.

I would have participated in the 'Lights Out' action, but the chloroform just didn't act quick enough upon the blasted fireflies in the jar.

Heres one for you science boffin types : Energy Tower

There must be something wrong with it, but I can't see it. that's a very elegant solution if the test bad works ok.

Now this is cool ...

High Density Algae Test Delivers 33,000 Gallons of Oil Per Acre

Quote:
As a comparative, food crop such as soy bean will typically produce some 48 gallons oil per acre per year and palm will produce approximately 630 gallons oil per acre per year. In addition, the Vertigro Bio Reactor System is a closed loop continuous production system that uses little water and may be built on non arable lands.

Re: Global Warming - what's behind it?

another intermittent piece from my web surfing :

Super Soaker Inventor Aims to Cut Solar Costs in Half

Quote:
even the best system converts only about 30 percent of received solar energy into electricity—making solar more expensive than burning coal or oil. That will change if Lonnie Johnson’s invention works. The Atlanta-based independent inventor of the Super Soaker squirt gun (a true technological milestone) says he can achieve a conversion efficiency rate that tops 60 percent with a new solid-state heat engine. It represents a breakthrough new way to turn heat into power.
nice ... resident Dr Spocks, whats your thoughts ?

Global warming - How serious are you?

Nowadays, whenever you switch on ur tv, u see something abt global warming

are u aware of it?
how serious are you in this matter
if u r serious, r u doing anything for it

personally, i hear lots of talk abt climatic change and all, but very few people really take actions for it

is this a general thing?

Re: Global warming - How serious are you?

1. Very aware of it, especially as it melts away my precious snow.
2. Serious about it, but still guilty about only allowing minimal inconvenience in my life.
3. Mixture
GOOD
- Walk and use public transport as much as possible.
- "Green" electricity and turn lights off when not in use.
- Recycle and endeavour to minimise packaging where I have any say.
- Run heating at a lower temperature than the sauna levels experienced in Austria. Could probably run it even cooler and comfortably wear a sweat shirt inside in winter.

BAD
- Love my big, powerful cars. Justified by only driving when public transport is impractical/impossible.
- International lifestyle has me flying a fair bit. But at least I'm not flying back "home" every weekend like some people I know.
- Leave DVD, TV, monitor etc. on standby. But some of these don't even have a proper off switch and European power sockets don't have an on/off switch on the wall like back in Australia.

I'm happy to do whatever is helpful, even at the cost of a slight inconvenience to myself.

but I am constantly put off by the immense amount of frantic, uninformed, gossipy buzz on the subject. my estimate is that the climate change fad (or at least the ethanol boom) will wither away in about a year or two

Re: Global Warming - what's behind it?

$45 trillion needed to combat warming

In the meantime, it is 14° outside in June. We could use some of that warming... as well as that money.

I'd like to give my contribution in keeping this thread alive... ehr... warm.
Global Warmings - I'm deeply concerned

I'm actually more deeply concerned re. climate "change" di per se than just about warming(s). The volatility in condition and temps IMHO bodes quite badly for a number of human related acivities. Hopefully I'm wrong.

There you are - now back to our regular programming....
