Good news to all Sri Lankans!

According to most of the reports the terrorist group LTTE is totally defeated by the Sri Lankan Army and their notorious leader is killed together with other seniors. This means, hopefully, all Sri Lankans can live peacefully as one nation. Hope the country will remain as it was.. "the pearl of indian ocean".

I hope it also means that all ethnicities ( Muslims included ) in Sri Lanka and its diaspora abroad will be come together as a single nation - it could do without events like this.

Re: Good news to all Sri Lankans!

That was the case before the war broke out. All Muslims, tamils and sinhalese were living peacefully as one nation. Still, in all parts of Sri Lanka including colombo all tamils, muslims and sinhalese live peacefully with each other. The LTTE started this war and attacked civillians, international politicians and even their own people, just to prove their point; which is senseless as any other terrorist group. I really hate it because innocent civillians has to pay with their lives for one stupid reason of a brutal leader like LTTE

Now I hope all these violent attacks on innocent Sri lankans from the LTTE terrorists supporters will stop.I feel sorry for the two people in Australia . Thanks for posting it out.

Re: Good news to all Sri Lankans!

Hopefully this will herald the dawn of a new peace in the troubled island nation. Terrorism of any kind is simply unacceptable (even if the basic motive was to procure equality for the ethnic Tamils living in Sri Lanka).

My thoughts lie more with the large scale humanitarian crisis which this conflict has succeeded in creating in the North East of the country. I sincerely hope that all the civilians who were brutalised by the incessant fighting (from both the Tigers as well as the Sri Lankan Government) are repatriated and treated well.

The onus now lies on the Sri Lankan government to prove that it is indeed a graceful victor and take all steps possible to assuage the war torn north eastern population.

The LTTE flag represent the LTTE supporters but not the Tamils. So they were terrorist supporters; since I did not see anyone asking the LTTE to release civillian hostages (innocent tamils) .

Please dont get mixed up. Tamils are a very trustworthy, hard working and a kind group of people. They pay ransom money to LTTE (Dont pay, more like forced to pay by LTTE supporters) in order for them to have a trouble free time in CH .

LTTE is a terrorist group (sadly made of up tamil people; sometimes against their will i.e. child soldiers) who will give all tamils around the world a very bad name.

Hope this cleared your confusion

I have to agree with most of what you have said but we must also note here the reason behind why the Tamil militancy came about,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sri_Lan..._and_evolution I would also add to the Wiki description, the 1983 Racial Uprising and the complicity of the then government of Sri Lanka to this most unfortunate incident.

Also Velupillai Prabhakaran is reportedly been killed... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8055015.stm It is indeed a moment of intense relief that the conflict has ended militarily and that V.P, the cult figure around which the struggle for a separate homeland was foolishly built is now no more, but we must not forget that the Tamil community is a broken community now and that we must deal with the situ in a humane manner!

Let's hope the government would use this momentum to move the political process forward and help heal the physical and mental wounds of the innocent Tamils civilians.

What will happen to all the tamil refugees now living in Switzerland? - will they be made to go back to their country now that the struggle is over? - some are third generation now.

Are you of sinhalese origin? You seem to be seeing the conflict from a very one sided perspective?

Problem is since the british left, Tamils have been badly discriminated against. You can say it is all the Tamil tigers' fault but that would not be the truth.

Well there are different types of Sri Lankan Tamil asylum seekers/ refugees,
1. Those fearing prosecution by the government because of their affiliation to the LTTE
2. Those fearing prosecution by the government because of their criticism of the government and government ally Karuna/TMVP http://sahasamvada-forum.blogspot.co...o-provide.html, who broke away from the LTTE and joined the government. Karuna and his group are responsible for many killings, abductions and disappearances
3. A few fearing prosecution by the LTTE
4. Those generally affected by the conflict

I think numbers 3 & 4 can voluntarily or probably would be sent back (depending on their status) to Sri Lanka. Nevertheless, I am not so sure about how many would voluntarily want to return because as you say some belong to the third generation. It is also a popular fact that a lot of these refugees have been granted asylum without really having a 'case'. Many Tamils have the notion that living in a western country means that your future is more or less complete and go to great heights to make this a reality!!! That is why most of the protests conducted by these Tamils seem so hypocritical! There is so much vested interest!

Re: Good news to all Sri Lankans!

My wife's best friend at work comes under catagory 1 - via her husband. Now they have C permits, since a change in the law a couple of years ago. (pretty genuine from what i can ascertain). Really good people and have merged nicely in CH. They have grandkids now.
Could ask the same question about the Balkans - but probably better not to.
One thing I read previously was that the people causing the hassle and instigating the feud were the ones more likely to get asylum - contacts, power, wealth and intelligence. Probably some truth in this. The people at the bottom of the pile are just cannon fodder.

I don't think so. Few things can hit you heart harder that needing to leave your life, your family and friends behind because of a war in your country. I highly doubt that their protests are hypocritical.

I hope the government in your country will now be able to administer wisely their victory and help to stop the discrimination that originated this war.

Well I think so cos' I'm a Tamil and have first hand experience from both my side as well as my husband's, and by living in Sri Lanka for 31 of my 33 years!! Nevertheless, I don't want to generalise.. cos there are many, many of them who really have had to leave due to terrible problems...but it is the case for many...

I'd like to add a small quote as food for thought...
"The Tamil diaspora has created this monster. They are the reason for this on-going war. They must stop this war because we need peace. We all need peace. Even the soldiers need peace. They don't want to be in this war. They want to go home and live in peace" - Rt. Rev. Thomas Soundranayagam, Bishop of Jaffna

Have you been to Sri Lanka? Did you notice how many Tamil people live in Colombo? There are Tamil schools, bussinesses and Temples they have? What kind of discrimination are you talking about?

I was talking about the LTTE. They made the innocent tamils believe in their own war. Do you watch/read news? If so you would have seen how they have spent all the money on tamil peoples welfare... i.e. building houses for them with AC rooms and swimming pools etc, where they would have invested in the people they claim to liberate. They even killed the educated Tamils in Sri Lanka (Laksman Kadirgaman one of the most famous) just because he was talking about the truth behind the LTTE and what they really want.

I totally agree with Thanuja and hope the government will invest alot in rebuilding Jaffna. This war made people suffer too much and its time that people live peacefully as one nation.

oops just noticed that i had made a huge blunder and had to delete my comment... i was talking about those who fear prosecution by the LTTE and/ or the government.... but i must acknowledge the fact that many who were with the LTTE have come out of it after understanding its narrow and repressive nature. a very well known activist who now lives in exile was also part of the LTTE in its early years. she was the first woman to have been imprisoned by the government for her involvement with the LTTE. she is now one of the most consistent and loud voices that highlight both the LTTE's and the governments atrocities. http://www.opendemocracy.net/article...-and-realities

It might not be such good news for the Sri Lankans that have recently come to Switzerland - if the situation really stabilizes, they will eventually lose their refugee status and will be sent back. I'd do everything to get permanent resident status right now.

Refugee status is declarative - those granted a B permit cannot be sent back whereas those granted an F permit ( provisional ) may be sent back and whereas those whose applications are still under consideration ( i.e N permit ) might face an uphill task to persuade the BFM.
