Why do so many people hate Michael Moore?

I really need to know the answer to this question. To me, it seems like he's doing good work, yet so many people seem to hate him.... Why? Surely it's good that he has an interest in the American people getting good health care. That he names and shames the corporations that robbed the US tax payer of billons of $! Isn't it good that he exposes the lies of Bush, Cheyney, etc?

Interested to hear your thoughts.
Cheers

Re: Why do so many people hate Michael Moore?

Well my brother inlaw is American and I cannot mention MM without him going into one about "what an a***hole Michael Moore is". I've also had encounters with others who say the same. To me this is strange when he seems to have the best interest of the American people at heart.

Funny you mention him. I was sorting my old DVDs out yesterday and I chucked his DVD in the bin

I don't hate him but I have dislike for people who are either too left leaning or too right leaning. They get so blinded by their agenda that they try to fit everything to match their view.

I bought his DVDs so I must have liked some parts of him.

Re: Why do so many people hate Michael Moore?

He does bring good things to light, however, he does tend to skew the facts to his favor. I like the issues he brings out - and usually his stance on them - but dislike how he does it with tremendous bias.

Generally, the more conservative the person in the US, the more they hate Michael Moore.

Lots of people think they have the best interest of the American people at heart. Neo-cons think they do. Democrats think they do. White supremacists think they do.

Doesn't mean they can't be arseholes, too.

I can't stand the bloke because he's a hysterical, misrepresenting, lying, obsessively ideologically blinkered nutcase.

But I'm not American, so it's not really for me to say...

Re: Why do so many people hate Michael Moore?

I have enjoyed watching his films and think bowling for columbine was probably IMO the best and probably least OTT sensationalist. Sicko was an eye opener but I do think he found the best and worst cases. I mean when he came to the UK it really was a bit OTT with rose tinted glasses but I did understand what he was trying to portray to the people back home that the UK has a welfare health system, we are not communists and that doctors do get paid a very good wage - so I agree with Hugh his intentions are good and he is trying to show the other side, I just think at times he ruins it by going that one step too far

Re: Why do so many people hate Michael Moore?

I think that up to Bowling he was okay and the humorous aspect of his work safed him from beign obnoxious but that changed with Fahrenheit, that Movie made him look stupid and not Bush. And don't get me wrong I really do love Roger & me but as a serious Documentary maker I prefer people like Eroll Morris.

Re: Why do so many people hate Michael Moore?

Have a quick shufti through Michael Moore Is a Big Fat Stupid White Manby Jason Clarke and David Hardy. I don't go much on the writing style, and the pro-republican bias is heavy, but at least the references to figures in that stand up to scrutiny.
Basically, I don't like Moore as he's very adept at bending the truth to pretty near the point where it snaps. I used to really like his TV Nation series, but the more I find out about him, the more I see he is an eminently unlikeable person who will distort things to prove a point, regardless of whoever gets hurt in the process. I now take any figures from him with a very heavy does of salt.
It's a shame as I think that there would be a good enough case for him to present without having to resort to either lying or stretching things as far as he does.

Re: Why do so many people hate Michael Moore?

Although I agree with much of what Moore says, I always feel like he's preaching to the converted. I'd much rather he reached out to the "Right" with reasoned, well balanced arguments even if it does mean him swaying towards the centre ground. The problem with American politics (as far as I can see it) is that everyone is shouting but nobody is listening.

It is clearly evident that the American right only listen to lies, especially when shouted.

Hence his strategy.

Maybe they go to the cinema to be entertained, amused or thrilled, rather than be harangued by some porky half-baked dissembling lunatic?

I agree, but isn't that just politics EVERYWHERE. Sorry for shouting. I bet you're not listening.
