New Bank Holiday for British Queen's 2012 Diamond Jubilee

God Bless the Queen

Extra holiday for Queen's Jubilee

A "nationwide celebration" will be held to mark The Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the government has announced.

Events to mark The Queen's 60 years on the throne will take place in the first weekend of June 2012, with an extra bank holiday being created.
Lord Mandelson said it would be a "truly historic occasion" which would allow the British people to show their "pride and affection" for The Queen.
He also announced that Greenwich would become a royal borough.
The Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002 was marked by celebrations across the UK, including a royal tour and a pop concert at Buckingham Palace.

It's going to be her Diamond Jubilee?

It only feels like yesterday that we were celebrating her Silver Jubilee...

Re: New Bank Holiday for Queen's 2012 Diamond Jubilee

I remember shimmying up trees in 1977 to put streamers up for the street party we had.

1981 saw another street party, oh those were the days!

Let's have a street party in Switzerland to mark the occasion! I'll be on holiday then, unfortunately, so can't make it

Back then people actually celebrated the event with street parties, nowadays it'll be marked by an extra 10% off in the B&Q Bank Holiday sale

You're not wrong! Of the 11 days public holiday we get in Zürich this year, 5 are negated by falling on a weekend. Grrrrrr!

Oh, hurrah, jolly good show, God bless the Queen of Australia.

We'll be terribly proud. Hope she doesn't peg out before then, though -- there'd be lots of dreadfully disappointed schoolchildren (and B&Q shoppers) if she did.

PS I still can't get over "Lord" Mandelson. It's just not right.

Personally, I liked her Golden Jubilee party the best. Quite a guest list.

Could be a double whammy ... QEII's successor's no spring chicken, and the shock of elevation to the CEO position could send him over the edge!

Re: New Bank Holiday for British Queen's 2012 Diamond Jubilee

She's determined to beat Queen Vic's record as the oldest living or longest reigning monarch, she has four more years to go.

So they re off.. celebrating at the Epsom Derby. The flotilla on the Thames should be ice with the Queen at the head of the Royal barge, maybe they could make her the figurehead.

Most people in London will be too busy gearing up for the Olympics ( Olympic Games 27 July-12 Aug 2012) it'll be a quick knees up at the pub, cheap battenberg on paper plates and squash, for those who can still afford it.

There will be a public party at the Viadukt market on the Saturday with some British food and drink (Pimms, scones & Clotted Cream etc), we're hoping to be allowed to have tables outside on the front forecourt for a street party of sorts.... if so there will also be bunting. There is also a rumour of a bagpiper too..... I'll create an event once we know what we're allowed to do.
