Google gets hacked, grows a pair

Apparently somebody has tried, and partially succeeded, to access the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights advocates.

In response, Google say they have reevaluated their approach to operations in China. They have stopped censoring search results, and are prepared to shut down both www.google.cn and their Beijing offices if it comes to that.

Google Blog: "A new approach to China"

maybe it wasn't the chinese govt, since as you say, they could have easily just asked.

I don't think they can get email content because its US servers that they attempted to compromise. From the UK papers google say they only breached a very few mailboxes but it was a sophisticated attack, which spanned other companies as well.

I have to admit, when I read this my first thought was, "Good for them - about time!"
...but then my second thought was, "wait a sec... if Google gets hacked, what hope do the rest of us have?!"

Considering that many of us live in a Google World e.g. emails, calendar, contacts, Google docs, photos ,web browsing history, file indexing etc.. the thought is very scary

Re: Google gets hacked, grows a pair

Maybe this was the right occasion to announce changes but not the real reason? "Google accounted for 16.6% of China's search market in 2008, according to the Chinese Internet Network Information Centre, while Baidu has a 76.9% share."
Google even gave out music for free (!)

So the hack looks like a very convenient reason to back out of an unsuccessful attack. After all I think this would be the first time that Google did not win somewhere, so how would the stock market react?

This is a very smart communication: Google potentially backs out and ends the discussions on one of the biggest stains on "do no evil".

If they pull out of China, they can kiss goodbye to Android sales.

Re: Google gets hacked, grows a pair

When I lived there, we all used weird loopholes to get around the firewall and the censorship. It really depended on what exact phrasing you used while searching.

I think it's a good idea if they stick to their guns, because even if hey then pull out of china, their reputation will recover.

And the Chrome browser, the Chrome OS and everything else . . .

I suspect this is hardball negotiation, though it's hard to see how Google can back-pedal.

Maybe this was their plan all along...

Unless you're using https and encrypted email, with big enough keys, assume anything your do on the web is being read by your neighbour, boss, mum, Dougal's Breakfast...

I think you're better off assuming it in any case... ;-)

Yeah, the biggest risk to your data from hackers is it's desirability. The biggest joke is SEOs discussing their new theories on Gmail. How do SEOs ever expect to catch up to the algorithm if they keep sharing their information with it?

Hushmail is pretty secure I find. Can anyone recommend anything else?
