Re: Why do people hate the UK ?

I would be interested to hear the areas of London that have improved over the last 10 years, or anywhere in the UK that has really.

Re: Why do people hate the UK ?

I'll give you some of my local ones, ones you can visit when you settle the bet...

Whitstable - become a highly desirable place to live. Loads of money spent on the town, become a bit more high brow that the sleepy place I remember from childhood visits. Lots of lovely little restaurants and a great feel to the town.

Faversham - now within the commuter belt to London and is much less of a sh*thole than it was.

Canterbury - new shopping centre bit but still retains its historical charm.

Oh and one downside - they've built another bridge over to the Isle of Sheppey, giving the Swampies another escape route

This thread is fascinating, like a group therapy confession. So here's mine. I've been here so long I consider myself some kind of hybrid. I can see both sides and have learned to refrain from sticking up for the Swiss, although if I was honest I often tried to, purely in the hope that the complainant may find things easier to understand or deal with. So after bashing me head against a brick wall, not to mention making myself unpopular, i ceased.

I love Britain and while many jet off to the far corners of the world I've taken great pleasure in discovering the country I left behind, by land, river and sea. It's only when I go home (often) to where I grew up that I really see the changes. I don't go out with my old mates in the city center anymore. It's just not pleasant. Vomiting, shrieking incoherent people and burly doorman, the Gods deciding who's in and who's out. That's just the weekend social scene.

Give me the local pubs with 3-4 generations of clientele, the barmaid who knows one of her regulars hasn't been in for a few days and sends someone out to find them. The community. They have them here in Switzerland you know, my mistake how could you know? Most of you don't speak the language and don't speak to the Swiss.......cos they are boring.

To be honest I didn't know whether to thank or groan - its 80/20 based on the last sentence!

The majority won.

We're moving to the countryside and hope to integrate better (especially now that the children are getting to school age), as integrating in a city we think is much harder...

One person's improvement is another's gentrification, but . . .

E2 is a very vibrant place to live and while I was there new interesting places were opening every week. Crappy old pubs still serving the dregs from a barrel of Watney were replaced by pubs that still had character and often went out of their way to serve good beer. Have a walk on Broadway Market on a Saturday morning or Columbia Road on Sunday and tell me the area's in decline.

Aha aha ha ha ahaahaha... hhhh.... aha ha ah ha... ha hmmm

Seriously though, have been in Whistable quite a lot recently (in-laws retred there a couple of years ago). So I can't compare historically, but I can say it is nice, and the main parts have been done up nicely with boutique shops (great for Christmas presents for those that have everything!). The reason I lost it a la Dr Evil is that my wife and I were out in the town and we heard a comment from a group of lads... (down from London at a guess)

"It's a bit posh, innit, there's not even a MacDonald's"

(There is one, it's just on the ring road...)

EDIT IN BOLD

The WestField shopping centre has an enourmous variety of shops open all hours of the day for shopping trips, the science museum and Natural History Museum offer wonderful days out for families, The Tate Modern, the O2 arena, there's bunches of top quality entertainment to be had in the capital.

I can't recommend highly enough the Sportsman, just outside Whitstable.

http://www.thesportsmanseasalter.co.uk/home.shtml

It's a genius pub . . . with a Michelin star.

The menu is highly seasonal and local. The chef-proprietor makes his own butter, salt, ham and chorizo. The butter is some of the best you will ever taste.

A pub like this is on its own is reason to believe that the UK is not in decline.

Why do people hate the UK ? Especially by people from the UK?

'Cause they are a bunch of sell-outs.

I love the UK.

Will try it when next there - thanks!
(although I do try and get my fill of curries when in the UK, I'll make an exception next time )

That's just trying to pour petrol on the debate

I don't hate the UK per se, although I'll admit my upbringing means I don't have deep roots in the UK, so I don't have it on a pedestal. What I do do is dislike what the UK is becoming though (Gastro Gnome will of course disagree that it is becoming worse ).

I like going back and visiting old friends, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to live there.

Quite a few of those posts are defending the UK. Or at least questioning the thinking of some of the naysayers.

Hello.

This thread is a spin off from recent postings on EF. A light hearted matter about reasons for leaving the UK which turned into a Britain Bashing session has been followed up with some more topics today where the responses that you would expect this or that sort of terrible activity "in the UK".

It all started out very light heartedly and I contributed myself with a mischevious posting or two but I have to honestly say I am taken aback with the amount of genuine hate (not mild disappointment, or tongue in cheek fun-poking but actual serious loathing) for the UK. And not just from UK based or formerly UK based people either. Attacks are from England Expats, but also american, Oz, Kiwi, seemingly everywhere.

There is no fighting back or coming to england's defence in this thread I just wondered why people loath england so much ? I mean what has it done to get to such an utterly desperate external view of itself by other people ?
US/OZ/NZ ridicule in most cases sounded humourous to some extent. Most negative to my astonishment are people of British origin.

I thought people hated Americans
Nobody hated US-Americans, but many US-Americans failed to understand that a man they saw as sympathetic was perceived as a seriously UNsympathetic and disgusting person quite personally and beside any politics. GWB was not really detested due to his politics but detested due to his personality and his personal style

Quote:
From talking to non-UK people here, it would seem they only fly into London and think that is "the UK" anyway.

Nice or sh*te as London might be, there is the rest of England plus three other countries to discover.

More than one person I know has confused Scotland with "northern England".

But why should London be sh....t ? London is the favourite city of many people, including quite many people right here in Switzerland. Brits from other parts of that country badmouthing their splendid major metropolis make a bad impression. I mean, major world cities with many millions of inhabitants inevitably have problems and have negative aspects. If there is much of light there also is much of shadow

This is a typical English characteristic. We are some of the most patriotic people around but some aren't happy unless they're moaning about something. I was always amazed to hear some of my countrymen here slag off England as I was always a big fan of the place and would always bore the Swiss with how great it was there. I don't get it

If you bore anybody it either was because you went too much into details, or repeated yourself, or referred specifically to Sheffield which for most people here around simply is a dot on the map !

If you read the British/Irish cities I have visited over the years, being London, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dublin (a favourite city of me which I used as a staging point twice for travelling to the USA on Aer Lingus), Bristol, Plymouth, Weymouth, Exeter, Salisbury, Bournemouth, Brighton, Dover
you will see that the "north-central" area is like a white area. And I do not regard my case to be extraordinary.
