Maker of useless "bomb detector" arrested

"Following an investigation by Newsnight, all exports
to Iraq and Afghanistan of a UK-made 'bomb detector'
that proved to be useless have been banned.

The director of the UK company which sold the useless
bomb-detecting device to 20 countries, including Iraq
and Afghanistan, has been arrested."

UK Government statement here.

For once, I'm speechless.

Re: Maker of useless "bomb detector" arrested

It's unbelievable. Do these things not have prove themselves in testing? Were there not field trials?

It gets worse -

"Last year, the James Randi Educational Foundation, an organization
seeking to debunk claims of the paranormal, publicly offered ATSC
$1million if it could pass a scientific test proving that the device could
detect explosives. Mr. Randi said no one from the company had taken
up the offer."

"ATSC’s promotional material claims that its device can find guns,
ammunition, drugs, truffles, human bodies and even contraband ivory
at distances up to a kilometer, underground, through walls, underwater
or even from airplanes three miles high. The device works on
“electrostatic magnetic ion attraction,” ATSC says."

What's more emphatic than "WTF"? I mean, WTF? Who the hell approved the purchase of it? They should also stand trial.

Major General Jehad al-Jabiri, who appeared at a press conference with Mr McCormick following the December explosions, said he did not "care about Sandia" and knew more about bombs than the Americans:
"Whether it's magic or scientific, what I care about is it detects bombs," he said.

With people like that running the "security" of the nation, it's really no wonder there is such a dismal success rate against insurgents...

One of my friends is a retired MOD procurement buyer and I could well believe thay would buy something like this without even testing it.
Lets face it they buy chinook helicopters with no software to fly them.

No, the UK govt decided that they could make better software for this chopper to fly than Boeing and decided to go this route. There have been major conflicts between the weapon systems and avionics. (same applies for the Apaches or Blackhawks also purchased) For time being choppers are stored in climate controled buildings, its gone so far over budget it's obscene and they still only have just managed to get the first 2 in to service after about 5 years.

What is the war moral ? Iraq there is more and more evidence emerging from the Chilcott inquirey that shows the invasion of Iraq was totaly unjustified. In Afghanistan Britain has no business being there, there was no direct consequence to Britain from 9/11 apart from what Amercian generals refer to as collateral damage, ie a few Britsh citizens that were unfortuantely in Twin Towers on 9/11. Britain has already tried 3 times in 18th & 19th century to conquer Afghanistan, all failed miserably, think of the Khyber pass....

As for this scam of selling crap false detectors, if you buy without testing, reviewing and applying technical specification, well you get what you ask for.

You have a point, still it is really sad that people take advantage of the situation in Iraq/Afghanistan...
And I never said the war was moral (or the invasion for that matter)...

If this is the worst that has happened with people taking advantage of these situations, then so be it. Back in 2001/2002 when the US military budget was $420 billion, i thought to myself, that's a lot of money. When you've worked with them, you really begin to seriously wonder if that's enough.

The word for their wastage has not yet been invented !
