Massive Earthquake (8.8) strikes Chile

This one's magnitudes bigger than than the Haitian quake.

Reports are a bit thin on the ground at the moment - BBC coverage here

For those interested, I just contacted Gonzalo via Skype. He and his family are well and safe no damage to their neighborhood. The epicenter was some 300 Km away.

Meanwhile French Polynesia just got a 2-meter tsunami, according to what I've read.

In the south of Peru the sea has withdrawn about 150 meters...it seems Hawaii is at risk for a Tsunami too

Saddening to see so many loss of life and tragedy occuring again for that city and country. I'm sure they will come out strong and better again. My heart goes out for them ...

My sister lives there, on Kauai. Currently (13:00 Texas; 20:00 Switzerland; 09:00 Hawaii) calls won't go through from here...

Re: Massive Earthquake (8.8) strikes Chile

Here I am. I count myself lucky, our neighborhood does not show any signs of such a big earthquake having hit last night. The death toll is not as high as you would expect (around 150 people so far), but the damages are extensive, especially in the southern part of Chile. Several bridges collapsed and some buildings too.

Quite a scary experience, to be awakened at 3:30 am by the tremors, run to grab my 4 years old son (as my wife did the same with our 7 years old daughter) and head downstairs to the house door. But other than the scare, we are fine.

Thanks for all the concern. Here's to hoping help reaches those who need it as quickly as possible.

Tim, did you hear anything from your sister? I hope they are OK. Did a tsunami actually reach Hawaii, or was it false alarm?

Yes, I heard from her (thanks for asking!). It was no false alarm, but thanks to early warning systems there was minimal loss. She said they were sounding the alarms every hour starting at 06:00, and calling every phone number on the island to make sure everyone was alerted. Here's what she wrote afterwards:
All clear. No damage on any of the islands that Im aware of. (You with TVs may know more than I do.) Pretty anti-climatic...but Im not complaining. The civil defense folks were probably tying up the phone lines, calling all of us on all of our phone lines. : )
So they're obviously much better off than they could have been.

I am quite happy NOT to have "experience" in this field. The worst one was a very mild quake, but I awoke at night, put the light on and saw the lamp swinging forward and back and considered to reduce my consumption of alcohol drastically, and then slept on again Only in the morning I learnt that it had been real ....

I hate the way when I hear something like this my brain automatically thinks about how many natural disasters are happening around the world and how sad it is!! I couldn't stand looking at papers around the time Haiti! now this!!
Always wish I had some unique talent so I could help these people!!
sadly I don't think I do

Because of the quake, the world is now a smaller place, literally.
