That's more or less it.
Thanks but what's with the climbing back up the hill then? Is that a reverse race?

I hope the Easter bottle kicking in our neighbouring village in England won't be affected by this. Spectators get injured every year, but I don't think there's been any deaths yet.

Ooooh, are you from Medbourne then? I lived in Drayton away back when - loved going to bottle kicking (never took part of course, being a lady). I don't remember it as being much more violent that a grudge rugby match.

Unbelievable that they can ban a tradition that's existed for hundreds of years just because too many 'tourists' want to view it.

*shakes head sadly*

TBH, I've never seen that aspect before. I suppose it's another way to inflict more pain on the already walking wounded?

Re: Cheese rolling cancelled!

Thanks for highlighting this story DB. It's whey out of line. These edam PC sorts make my blood curdle. There's gouda be some sort of compromise to keep this event rolling on. Maybe after a rethink it'll be stilton.

DB's stories might be tall but yours are Emmenthaler. Anyway, this Agurs well for us. There ought to be an EF event for the psychos and Nusskase - Sbrinzing down a hill or Appenzeller.

Don't be such a semi-soft. Grow a thicker rind and this brine wouldn't grate against your culture so much. The event has obviously aged to the point where the half-wheels who rennet need a cure: curd control.

Please, someone, explain how cheese rolling works and put me out of my befuddlement. What I see from Grumpy's vid is that a wheel of cheese is rolled down the slope and the 'racers' follow how the cheese bounces? At the finish line, each contestant is tackled and thrown down?!

P.S. Loved the racer with the horse head.
You had got it right and the other explanations are just about spot on. There is an official guide Here

It is apparently the organisers who have cancelled the event 'because it is getting to popular'. Basically, I think that they are bowing down to perceived H&S issues.

As Joolie said, it is a big deal there. I have family living alomost within sight of the hill. It seems certain that some form of event will take place, even if unofficial and unsupervised.

The Facebook group is growing really fast. About an extra thousand members this evening! They are also going to petition the Government.
I think it was the traffic that brought it to the attention of the "bods who are able to cancel a tradition" ....apparently cars were abandoned on the nearby motorway when the queues just stopped moving........back in my day it took us all morning to walk there as we were all from the local area and knew damn well we would not get close in a car ! Park and ride sounds like a solution to me and a money earner for the farmers ........there you go, problem sorted .....

Re: Cheese rolling cancelled!

I was born in Gloucester and took part on Cooper's Hill one year. Didn't win but did get down the hill and we all celebrated our achievement at the Flying Machine (pub) later in the evening (with cheese and onion crisps of course!)

Quoet from the article:

" It makes you wonder if other traditional events like the wool sack racing and the shin kicking will also be cancelled. "

Shin kicking? I'd love to see that

Re: Cheese rolling cancelled!

This years event has also been cancelled. Organisers introduced a 20 entry fee to cover H&S concerns and limit numbers but have received objections and abuse

It sadly looks that this event is now well and truly "over the hill".
[sorry if the above is a bit cheesy]

Re: Cheese rolling cancelled!

In the States if this happened, Pepsico and CheezWiz would step in and sponsor the thing, pay for stadium seating and a car park etc. Bring some commercialism to it but it'd continue. In England, if it seems too hard, we just slope off to the pub.

No, clearly I'm not either, but at least it shows a winning spirit.

Re: Cheese rolling cancelled!

It sounds like a cheese rolling event down Uetliberg would be perfect publicity stunt for the British Cheese Centre....just it would be a waste of a decent Double Gloucester.

Hmm...Double Gloucester...hmmm....cheese on toast...hmmm

Cheers,
Nick
