Re: Polish President Lech Kaczynski 'in plane crash'

Following the shocking news today, I wanted to learn more about Mr. Kaczyński, his role in Poland's successes and his career. I was suitably impressed and I am sure he will be greatly missed.

Although I did not follow in detail the domestic and foreign affairs of Poland, I had heard enough to be impressed. There are many positive lessons to be learned by other countries from the successes and growth in Poland.

For those who need and would like to learn more about him, the introduction I found helpful is at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lech_Kaczy%C5%84ski

My condolences to his fellow citizens.

I feel very sorry for the tragic accident, especially given the circumstances. But if you want to learn more about him, forget the Wikipedia article. As the NZZ said today, there has never been a politician more controversial in Poland than him and there is a lot to read and learn. I widely disagreed with his views (he tried to establish a very nationalistic and strongly religious catholic society) and his actions in the past years (he did not perceive his role as a president to be a senior politician who unites the country, he was supposed to apply "checks and balances"... but used everything he could to push his brother and extensively his veto rights to block the new government with which he does not agree).

I hope people will remember him for his role in the peaceful revolution instead.

he was mot very popular and not liked. For me it is a tragedy anyways as many high ranking military officers have died on way to honour the 20k of officers murdered by Soviet troops. Cruel irony.

Too true. As Shorrick has already observed: what a time for this to happen!

So far as anyone's thoughts can be with an entire people, mine are with the Polish people this evening.

Before I believed in horror movies as a sheer human invention. This tragedy is like in a horror movie. You go to the place to commemorate your ancestors and evil is waiting there. I know it is just circumstances, could be human mistake and anything else but your mind tends to disagree.
One of the worst tragedies in history where majority of government intelligence's been killed.

Re: Polish President Lech Kaczynski 'in plane crash'

This is really sad.

He was one of the few that stood up against Brussels and didn't get walked all over and stuck up for the beliefs of his country and people unlike a lot of leaders that are looking after themselves and their future.

I am just glad that Russia hasn't been accused of any conspiracy which I was expecting when I heard about the accident this morning.

Re: Polish President Lech Kaczynski 'in plane crash'

I feel for the people, as much as I can (especially with other more personal issues on my mind lately for sure). I'm sorry to all our fellow EF'ers who are affected by this tragedy.

Whatever the politics of the day in Poland, the thought that keeps striking me is just how many of the top officials were killed in that accident. I really wonder what will come with the plethora of "new" blood now necessary at the top levels of their government.

(What in the world were they thinking to have so many top ranking officials on the SAME flight??)
