Croatian teenager wakes from coma speaking fluent German

This teenage girl (article) manages to completely master a language while being in a coma. I can just see the ads in a couple of years, "Let Bellingua put you to sleep and wake up fluent in any language of your choice!"

Only problem is you seem to forget your first language....

Eh, they'll find a way around that.

So she's mastered the use of a coma. Next, the apostrophe.

Since waking up from her 24 hour coma however, she has been unable to speak Croatian, but is able to communicate perfectly in German.

Re: Croatian teenager wakes from coma speaking fluent German

When I first came here I used to listen to Deutsche Welle on the wireless, sometimes even falling asleep with it on in the background. Now although I still can't speak German for toffee, I'm convinced that I've amassed enough of it in my semiconscious that I could stand up in the Bundestag and argue economic reform with Angela Merkel.

A note to the more "suggestible" here:

Please do not injure your head in a valiant attempt to learn Swiss German!
The reported phenomenon is incredibly rare; you are much, much more
likely to sustain brain damage than you are to unlock a new mental skill.

German lessons have me bagging my head most weeks, maybe I should wear a crash helmet although the coma option is a possibility.

Just 'cos it's in a newspaper, that doesn't mean it's true.

I shall maintain a high level of skepticism.

The expert: "it's better to continue tests until we actually know something."

The journalist: "Croatian teenager wakes from coma speaking fluent German"

I long the times when information preceded the news. I guess it shows my age, too

Which beggars the reposting of this:

Story reminds me of my former Professor, he told me his elderly great Uncle had suffered a stroke and after was only able to speak the rudimentary French he learnt as a teenager. He could still understand the Swiss German he heard, but could not respond in kind, only in broken French.

Re: Croatian teenager wakes from coma speaking fluent German

I've been known to speak german in my sleep.

Freaked the hell out of my roommate in University. Sleep talking is scary enough for an American to have to hear it in DEUTSCH!

Re: Croatian teenager wakes from coma speaking fluent German

What do they mean by "fluent German"? Forgetting a language can be a caused by brain damage, so maybe she only knew German the way she learned it. But no way she just woke up and was suddenly speaking fluently, with a healthy vocabulary, and a Berliner accent.

I think that is quite normal.
When you have a stroke you loose you generally loose last stuff in your memory.
If you were born in France and learnt French and then went to live in Germany and learnt German and you had a stroke; it would be highly likely you would loose your memory of German and start speaking only in French.
