Re: Massive earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand

Nice couple of posts there.

What gets me is the whole phenomenon of liquifaction!

I was taliking to my uncle there this morning who said his neighbours living room just suddenly filled up like it was water pouring up through the ground!

Scary if your inside that at the time.

It's awful, they are expecting to find up to 120 more bodies of Foreign Language students in the rubble of the CTV office block...

Re: Massive earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand

For those who like me have no idea about New Zealand, a link out of the internet about Christchurch/NZ
http://www.virtualoceania.net/newzea...ral-botanical/

As ironic as it may sound, you cannot revive human beings having been killed by an earthquake, BUT you can carefully rebuild historical buildings.

Just sent an Email to an old schoolfriend I know since 1956 and whose son is in a language school somewhere in NZ. Hope for good news but fear and brace for the worst

As the city now hit so badly is similar in size to Zurich I tried to imagine how things would be like over here in case of a comparable quake and shivered. It most certainly would be far worse. 10'000 dead as a minimum, not to speak about the buildings and the infrastructure. The breaking down Limmat security system would lead to the Limmat becoming a tremendous stream. Absolute horror ! And so, I deeply feel with the folks of CHC .

Yes! Just wacky!
I remember a new subdivision being built when I was living there (Northern Chch), and the controversy about it being built on old swamp-land..

They dont seem to have fallen down, though who knows if you can paddle in their living rooms...
Map I found this morning.

Yes. Was discussing with Swiss-mates yesterday. The "cheaply" built houses in NZ, from wood, usually sway, where the brick/concrete structures built here, crumple. ZH wouldn't survive.

Also found this: http://www.civildefence.govt.nz/ this morning, for those still following events.

Re: Massive earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand

It's pretty scary what's going on back home ... and I feel pretty far away from friends and family right now who have all been affected in some way by what's happened, particularly this time around. In London I know the Kiwi expats are arranging fundraisers ... do you reckon we could do something like that here in Zurich too??? Would people be up for it??? It seems to be getting worse not better there as the days go on, with more people dead, more buildings and businesses and lives being demolished.

A) in regard to Zürich you most certainly are right. Nothing would be prepared here and topography and nature of buildings would create a total disaster

B) In regard to the son of my schoolfriend, I heard that he out of Christchurch, Queenstown and Auckland chose Auckland ! But that they also in AKL feel devastated. My friend and his wife gave him phone calls these days almost twice per day . He in fact decided against CHC as the name of that city did not please him Whatever, we all feel with the CHC folks !

Another Earthquake in Christchurch 13 June

Christchurch was my "home away from home", and is a special place in my heart. So all of these earthquakes really sadden me.

Re: Massive earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand

Terrible news.

Still I wouldn't be so surprised at a bad earthquake on New Zealand or Indonesia or Japan. They're dangerous plate boundaries. These earthquakes will be changing the way people build their houses for the better to avoid another massive loss of life, which is a silver lining at least. Previous major earthquakes have made Japan better prepared for earthquakes

Feeling similar.
Assume you meant "world" though.. (wrt John 1:1..)
Else we may have more to worry about than we initially thought.

More people have to leave their homes. The rest using portable toilets until the sewage system is repaired, and the other effects, that we cannot begin to imagine.

Thoughts in this house are that one of New Zealands largest cities will continue life as a ghost town.

I sadly think you might be right about that. Up until yesterday when the latest series of quakes hit (and it's been revised from 6.0 to 6.3, same as Feb's one) I would of happily moved back to Christchurch when we head back to NZ in 2 years time. Now after seeing the images on Sky News, hearing from friends and family in Christchurch and listening to the terror in peoples voices when talking about living through the quakes, I really don't know if I would want to return to my former home town and have my family live through what they are experiencing now.

Just read this article in The Press and it breaks my heart to think this is "normality" for Christchurch. Will it ever recover?

That what I exactly meant... (darned iPhone's auto-correction )

I'm really sad and perplexed especially with upcoming rugga WC2011 in September how the nation will cope with this kind of disaster struck by nature and still be in a position to host the remarkable event.

Presumably it is the same ridge that hit Japan?

That being the case, does that mean we can expect another big one in Japan in a couple of month's time?

In other earthquake-ravaged places, cities were rebuilt a few kilometers away from the original place, as a few kilometers can make a lot of a difference. Is that an option for CHC ?

IF it is decided however to re-build on the "old" location, all newly built buildings should be earthquake-resistant as far as anyway possible. This may be a real challenge for the engineers in charge !

The picture below shows that the answer is YES, but also NO in a way. You can see that it is connected, but not directly.

and none of the experts can forecast WHEN & WHERE the next earthquake is to happen ! just as none can forecast which vulcano is the next

No, it is not the same fault that caused the Japan earthquake. In fact the ChCh has several different faults lines but (simjplified) movement in one, can cause cause a reaction in another nearby one.

I am filled with admiration for the people who are still in ChCh. People who still have water, or even a roof over their heads, are offering accomodation to those who are less lucky, amongst the folk I know. Although there is obviously a lot of fear, their is also a lot of goodwill and even some very funny humour that is still showing through. Kia kaha, Otautahi.
