Vague US Dept of State Warning for EU

The US Dept of State is reportedly weighing a general warning for Americans in Europe (not Switzerland so far..), on intel terrorist groups are planning a "Mumbai-style" assault. Possible targets are public places in Germany, France, England, Italy, and Belgium.

So..in effect..something could happen by someone somewhere. Carry on..

So, presumably, when this heightened state of whatever it is is over, they'll issue an update saying that it's ok to back to doing whatever it was that people were doing before the way they were doing it before...

On the plus side, there'll be lots of cheap flights to the States again

The potential targets mentioned in that article tend to be places where there are more than "just" Americans. Sometimes caution is good and considering how often recently American intelligence agencies and sources have come under suspicion / attack for NOT warning in a timely manner, I'd rather err on the side of caution.

Yes of course. Sadly this warning is slightly more than the constant advisory that has been in effect for quite a while from the State dept. Naming "soft targets" essentially puts almost anywhere in play...restaurants, train stations, grocery stores, car dealerships. A foiled attack in Germany a few years back brought a 10 page list of soft targets assembled by German law enforcement. At that time US servicemen and women were particularly targeted, so any "soft target" near a military base was warned.

Being careful is always wise. Being doubly careful around high-profile tourist sites (Eiffel Tower for example) would also be a good idea, in my opinion.

So we're supposed to, er, do what, exactly, with this information?

If you happen to be somewhere where a bomb goes off, all the caution in the world isn't going to be much use.

Might as well just carry on as normal and keep our fingers crossed.

I suppose it would be helpful to be reminded that such a disaster is always possible, so that you can be sure to look up how best to react in a situation in which you are stuck in the middle of a panic-ridden city. I'm not sure what exactly that would entail, though.... Maybe figuring out what you would do if airspace is closed and telecommunications are difficult?
But I'm certainly not going to invest in a satelite phone just on the off-chance that a bomb goes off while I'm in Paris or London.

You're right, it's also impossible to "be vigilant" to avoid a bomb.

Apparently the UK also has now issued a story and France has been warning folks for two weeks.

Sure. They finally started to learn from G.W... the more vague these statements are, the more phantasy do the journalists need to come up with something that makes sense. Keeps them nicely busy and they will forget the entire "we kicked the Romanians out to improve my image as president and now the EU is getting seriously angry" story in the meantime...

Those heightened Security Levels in full

  • England has raised its security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved."

Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross". The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to a "Bloody Nuisance". The last time the English issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

  • Scotland's security level has been raised from "Pissed Off" to "Let's Get The Bastards".

The Scots don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been right on the front line of the British armed forces for the last 300 years.

  • France has announced that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide".

The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender". The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralysing the country's military capability.

  • Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly And Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing".

Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides".

  • Germany's alert state has been elevated from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs".

They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose".

  • Belgium, on the other hand, is - as usual - on holiday.

The only threat the Belgians are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

  • Spain is all excited to see its new submarines ready to deploy.

These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms, so the New Spanish Navy can get a really good look at the Old Spanish Navy.

  • USA is keen to promote "business as usual", hence the same effective level of alertness since 2001.

The only key difference at the moment is you can’t pack your underwear in your hand-luggage. They will continue to carry out pre-emptive strikes on all of their allies 'just in case'.

  • Canada does not have any alert levels.

And, in the Southern Hemisphere...
  • New Zealand has also raised its security level: from "baaa" to "BAAAA".

Due to continuing defense cutbacks (the airforce being a squadron of spotty teenagers flying paper aeroplanes, and the navy is some toy boats in the Prime Minister's bath), New Zealand has one only more level of escalation, which is "I hope Australia will come and rescue us".

  • Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No Worries" to "She'll Be Right, Mate".

Three more escalation levels remain: "Crikey!', "I Think We Might Need To Cancel The Barbie This Weekend" and "The Barbie Is Cancelled". So far, no situation has ever warranted escalation to this final level.

Re: Vague US Dept of State Warning for EU

At first I was sure that this "warning" was actually directed at american tourists in a sense that they would be the target, not the larger cities of Europe because of whatever other reason.
I´m not so sure anymore.. Maybe that was the plan all along though.
Come to think of it, what did they try to accomplish with this statement??

Re: Vague US Dept of State Warning for EU

I received this email yesterday from the US Embassy in Bern. It's the first communication that I have ever received from them. I, for one, am happy that I am finally getting something in return for paying US taxes while no longer being a resident.

WARDEN MESSAGE
Travel Alert - Europe
October 3, 2010
The State Department alerts U.S. citizens to the potential for terrorist attacks in Europe. Current information suggests that al-Qa’ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks. European governments have taken action to guard against a terrorist attack and some have spoken publicly about the heightened threat conditions.
Terrorists may elect to use a variety of means and weapons and target both official and private interests. U.S. citizens are reminded of the potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems and other tourist infrastructure. Terrorists have targeted and attacked subway and rail systems, as well as aviation and maritime services. U.S. citizens should take every precaution to be aware of their surroundings and to adopt appropriate safety measures to protect themselves when traveling.
We continue to work closely with our European allies on the threat from international terrorism, including al-Qa’ida. Information is routinely shared between the U.S. and our key partners in order to disrupt terrorist plotting, identify and take action against potential operatives, and strengthen our defenses against potential threats.
We recommend U.S. citizens register their travel plans with the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy through the State Department's travel registration website. Travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. and Canada, or on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444 from elsewhere in the world.
For information on general crime and security issues, U.S. citizens should also consult the Department of State's Country-Specific Information as well as the Worldwide Caution, which can be found on the Bureau of Consular Affairs website. For further information on safety tips while traveling abroad, U.S. citizens should also consult the following website: http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/tips_1232.html
This Travel Alert expires on January 31, 2011.

This email is UNCLASSIFIED.

I have decided to pack up my family and move to the bunker down the street in the School House until this warning is lifted. You don't think they would target schools, do you?

Wow, I feel totally left out. I'm also registered with the US Embassy and I didn't get an email, although I have received some in the past. Maybe they drop you off the list after a while, which isn't especially useful of them.
