It reminded me of when the Kapellbrücke in Luzern burnt down. It within a few years was re-built, and now looks better than before.

Work on restoring the pier is now well underway. There is a programme about it on BBC2 this Sunday 16th March

Re: Hastings Pier destroyed by fire

Sadly Eastbourne pier, just along the coast is suffering the same fate by the looks of it. A fire started this afternoon and it looks like about a third of the pier has been destroyed already

Sad and awful indeed. But the fire of the Kapell-Brücke in Luzern revealed serious construction mistakes, common in the 19th Century, both in Britain and in Switzerland

The new Kapellbrücke is a much safer place .................... and more comfortable anyway

Re: Hastings Pier destroyed by fire

Less than four years since the fire that all but destroyed the pier and the restoration is well underway.

Last week a jack-up barge with a crane arrived to clear the remains of the ballroom from the furthest end of the pier. This was previously used to help with the salvaging of the Costa Concordia. The barge is due to be here about three weeks. Work is going on round the clock as it is costing £13,000/day to hire

The front of the pier is close to completion with much of the decking and restored railings in place on top of the strengthened structure

the railing and the new ground look good --- let's hope that the actual structures are equally good and less likely to catch fire

The structure has been strengthened so that fire engines can drive onto the pier if necessary. The materials are more fireproof e.g. The corners of the decking boards have been rounded. This gives it 20 minutes extra fire resistance

Re: Hastings Pier destroyed by fire

Despite a few setbacks due to storm damage, an official opening date has been announced. The work should be completed this October with the official opening on 21st March 2016

Quote:
Hastings Pier is to open for business Monday 21st. March 2016, the start of the Easter holidays, as works complete later this year, “We’re really disappointed not to be opening earlier but the storms in February 2014 caused a significant amount of additional damage and pushed back the works three months or more; almost all the work will be finished this year but not completed in time to open the pier during any of the traditional seaside trading months”, said CEO of the Hastings Pier Charity, Simon Opie. The charity has ruled out opening the pier in the winter.
Completion is expected around October this year after storm delays to the build schedule, “that storm, the same one that ripped the railway up in Dawlish, created big problems for us and meant us rethinking the demolition of the old ballroom,” said Opie. A floating barge became necessary as the storm damage made the pier too dangerous to be used as the demolition platform. “The additional costs weren’t a problem as we’d insured the structure, but the wait time for the barge and the extra work added to the build schedule and we just haven’t been able to catch up.”

But people will get the chance to get on the pier well before next March; Christmas pop-up attractions are planned, including a Christmas fair and possibly a skating rink, as Opie is keen to get the pier being used as soon as possible. “Its vital the pier is financially viable; all the money raised paid for the restoration but once finished the pier must pay its way. And most importantly, its a pier for Hastings, its a local attraction and a local asset for townspeople and visitors alike.”

Five years ago today most of us in Hastings thought we had lost our pier for ever but it is now almost fully restored and will be reopening in a few months

Re: Hastings Pier destroyed by fire

Finally, the end is in sight

Quote:
We are now in the final weeks of construction, the cranes have gone and the last piece of the 3,000 tonnes of new steel has been fitted.

The final lengths of the 50 miles of Ekki deck boarding are being laid and the last box of the 510,000 screws has been opened.

Having at last got the electric power on, we are finalising the Visitor Centre, testing the heating and the other systems, so that we can then start installing the equipment, exhibits etc. ready for the opening next month.

Fitting out of the Pavilion building for the new restaurant is nearing completion ready for the kitchen equipment and the final fittings are to go in.

The railings at the front of the Pier have been repaired and painted in our Fir Green colour and the wave breaks are being installed.

Our site huts are being removed progressively as the workforce reduces.

After two and a quarter years we can now see the end of what has been a very challenging and thoroughly rewarding project for everyone involved.

Wish they could have restored the second pier in Brighton. I was born and raised there, and was so sad when the storm wrecked what was left of the pier.

Which year was it built? My mother spent a year in Hastings learning English in 1932 - aged 17- and had an absolute ball. Got lots of wonderful photos of her and friends having huge fun on the beach there. Glad it has been restored - perhaps will stop there for fish and chips when we are next over - join us?

Sadly, the future for the West Pier in Brighton is not so good. The remains are breaking up in each storm

In 1932 there would still have been two piers in Hastings. The second one, St. Leonards Pier/Palace Pier/The American Palace Pier, suffered bomb damage in 1940 and was demolished in 1951. Would love to see you here. Any excuse for fish and chips

Yes. Both Hastings Pier and the West Pier in Brighton were designed by Eugenius Birch.
